Job Description Summary
Greenhouse and Garden Assistants support full time staff in performing routine maintenance tasks at James G. Kaskey Memorial Park and in the Biology Department Greenhouse. These temporary (non-exempt) part time positions have hours and responsibilities that shift seasonally and include weekend and holiday work. Some greenhouse or garden experience is required.

Job Description

James G. Kaskey Memorial Park and the Biology Department Greenhouses are located on the southwest side of the University of Pennsylvania campus in center city Philadelphia. The 3.5 acre park is home to mature shade trees and numerous species of shrubs and perennials collected and planted over many years since its establishment in the late 1890s. The Biology Greenhouses are home to faculty research plants, course lab plants and the permanent plant diversity collections.

Greenhouse and Garden Assistants support full time staff in performing routine maintenance tasks at James G. Kaskey Memorial Park and in the Biology Department Greenhouse. These part time positions have hours and responsibilities that shift seasonally. Year round, Assistants alternate weekend and holiday duties in the greenhouse and growing areas, watering plants and checking for/reporting abnormalities in growing conditions. Additionally, weekend and holiday greenhouse work may include deadheading, plant cleanup, pot washing, repotting, and general greenhouse cleanup. During the main outdoor growing season (mid-April-December) Assistants work an additional 2-3 days per week in the gardens at Kaskey Park. Essential garden tasks include weeding, mowing, blowing off paths, string trimming, irrigation, planting, and litter control.

Qualifications:
  • Some greenhouse or garden experience, especially a basic understanding of the watering needs of different plant types, and basic weed identification is required.
  • Must be able to work independently after training and possess a keen eye for detail and be consistent, thorough and reliable in their work.
  • Effective communication with the rest of the team is required.
  • Must be able to safely operate power tools such as mowers, blowers, string trimmers and power washers or be willing to learn.
  • Must be willing and able to work in typical regional outdoor conditions
  • Must be able to occasionally lift/carry items up to 50 lbs.


Hours: Weekend and Holiday hours: up to 5 hours per day, every other weekend/holiday; Weekday hours: 7 hours per day, 2-3 days per week depending on season.

Pay: $15/hour
