Job Description Summary
The focus of this role is to lead a team of Cell Processing Technologists in the day-to-day activities related to the conduct of cell and gene therapy clinical trials at the Clinical Cell and Vaccine Production Facility (CVPF) and Center for Advanced Cellular Therapies (CACT) of the University of Pennsylvania.

Job Description

Cell Processing responsibilities include operation of bioprocessing equipment, executing routine culture maintenance and following established Standard Operating Procedures of high level complexity in ISO Class 7 and 8 clean room environments. The role will also require stringent aseptic operations and accurate complex level documentation for internal and regulatory reporting following Good Documentation Practices.

Demonstrated expertise as a master operator and knowledge resource of GMP cell processing equipment, laboratory and manufacturing techniques, or equivalent is required. Demonstrated critical thinking skills to ensure that the data are accurate, logical and consistent with institutional and regulatory reporting requirements are required. The Technical Operations Manager is responsible for the supervision of Cell Processing Technologists, Cell Therapy Specialists and Team Leads. With minimal direction, the Manager is expected to resolve problems that occur in the cleanroom, oversee cell processing activity, provide strategic direction for the implementation of novel processing methods and new trials and implement contingency plans for unexpected processing events. Lead new trial initiation activity, represent CVPF externally for site initiation visits. Collaborate with the Process Development Lab (PDL) in the design of processing methods and validation of new equipment and manufacturing processes to support tech transfer into the cell processing facility.

The Manager is a supervisor-on-the-floor and expected to act as a role model for safety, compliance and continuous improvement activities to junior and senior staff. Efficient time management and ability to multi-task to complete activities for multiple clinical studies at a given time are essential. Manage internal and external collaborations with vendors and regulatory personnel to assure regulatory compliance of manufacturing processes; assist supervisor with compliance audits performed by regulatory bodies and collaborators. Additional responsibilities may apply.

Routine interaction with senior level management, cell processing technologists, quality control scientists, quality assurance personnel, and additional support staff is necessary. This position is an Essential University employee and is required to report to work in times of inclement weather and University closure. Ability and willingness to work flexible hours when necessary is required.

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Biology or related science or equivalent combination of education and experience required, Master's degree preferred. A minimum of 5 years prior demonstrated cell processing/cell culture expertise is required. Cell therapy experience is required. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and consistently meet deadlines is required. Flexibility, Dedication, Accountability and Team-oriented interpersonal skills are essential in this position.
