President

The University of Maine (UMaine) seeks an accomplished and energetic leader to serve as the University’s 21st President, succeeding retiring President Susan J. Hunter.

The flagship campus of the University of Maine System, UMaine is a land and sea grant university serving the state, nation and world through its research, teaching, and outreach mission. Founded in 1865, the University has a rich history of providing premier educational opportunities for the people of Maine and beyond at an affordable price. UMaine is the only major research institution and the only Carnegie classified research university in the state. The University serves more than 11,000 undergraduate and graduate students, employs 2,025 full-time faculty and staff, and offers the only Division I athletics program in Maine. Located in the town of Orono, UMaine boasts a beautiful New England setting in the heart of the state with endless opportunity to take advantage of pristine natural surroundings.

Reporting to the University of Maine System Chancellor, James H. Page, the President is the executive officer of UMaine and the University of Maine at Machias (UMM), one of six other institutions in the System. The President has nine direct reports, holds financial responsibility for UMaine and UMM, and serves as the chief fundraiser for UMaine. The next President will be an intellectual leader for UMaine and the state, and will lead a strategic planning process that builds on the current Blue Sky Plan and identifies the next set of strategic priorities for UMaine under the System’s One University initiative, creating greater collaboration between the System’s seven institutions. S/he should possess demonstrated, successful executive-level leadership experience, a clear appreciation for the mission of a land and sea grant public research university, a deep commitment to collaborative leadership, and an entrepreneurial spirit with a track record for bringing innovative solutions to complex challenges. This presidency offers a truly exciting opportunity to lead a passionate learning community with unwavering commitment to serving the people of Maine.
