Job Profile Title
Staff Writer B

Job Description Summary
The Annenberg School for Communication is a unique place at Penn. Our students receive an education that encourages them to redefine what communication studies can do - and what media expertise entails in the real world. And our faculty, scholars, and students produce rigorous multidisciplinary research that challenges and changes people's understanding of media institutions and their effects. Our staff support this work as part of an intimate work environment, wherein faculty, students, staff, and scholars are one interactive community. As the smallest of Penn's 12 schools, Annenberg staff enjoy a small-school environment along with the benefits of working for the larger institution that is the University of Pennsylvania. This, we think, makes us a truly distinctive employer at Penn.

The Staff Writer position has a concentration on content development for the Annenberg School for Communication, principally in writing news stories and press releases about schoolwide milestones and initiatives, and Annenberg faculty and student research.

Job Description
  • Write news stories, press releases, newsletters, and email announcements for internal and external publication about the Annenberg School and the work of its community of scholars, researchers, and students.
  • Think creatively about new ways to promote the school's work to diverse public audiences, including writing with a Development/Institutional Advancement focus.
  • Edit news stories or press releases written by other staff members or interns.
  • Strategize, develop, and post content for school websites and social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram).
  • Provide support with media relations, identifying stories, monitoring news for Annenberg mentions.
  • Maintain and update website content as part of the team.
  • Serve as point person for special event news items and project materials (i.e. Graduation).
  • Assist with team projects as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

The writer is a highly motivated and creative communicator with a Bachelor's Degree and at least 2-3 years of experience in journalism, creative communications, or public relations, or equivalent combination of education and related experience. Reporting to the Director of Communications, the position coordinates closely with other team members responsible for graphic design and video.

We seek a flexible team player and strategic thinker, with the ability to proactively identify communications opportunities in order to widen the reach and enhance the reputation of the school. It is essential that the candidate possess superior writing skills, creativity, and a knack for making complicated ideas and materials easily understood and compelling. Experience with writing in an academic setting is highly desirable, as is translating a wide array of scholarly work and initiatives for a wider audience.

The position is currently a hybrid 3/2 remote work split - three days in the office and two days at home. Continuation of this work schedule is contingent upon changes/updates to the university/school remote work policy.

Please note that a resume AND cover letter must be submitted. They may be uploaded as one document or two.
