The born-digital archivist will process born-digital, analog, and hybrid collections held by the Kislak Center, the University Archives and the Katz Center. The born-digital archivist will work closely with colleagues in the Preservation Department and the Technology and Digital Initiatives, as well as fellow archivists, curators, donors, and record managers.

Job Description

The Kislak Center for Special Collections, Rare Books and Manuscripts seeks an enthusiastic digital archivist to build a program to acquire, accession, preserve, process, and make accessible born-digital archival material. The Born-Digital Archivist will develop the born-digital archives program by creating workflows, policies, and training modules for the Kislak Center for Special Collections, Rare Books and Manuscripts and the University Archives , with the goal of efficiently and responsibly stewarding all born-digital archival content. The born-digital archivist will process born-digital, analog, and hybrid collections held by the Kislak Center, the University Archives and the Katz Center. The born-digital archivist will work closely with colleagues in the Preservation Department and the Technology and Digital Initiatives, as well as fellow archivists, curators, donors, and records managers.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develop born-digital processing program, from acquisition to access, establishing policies, workflows, and manuals to process specific media types, and for hardware (Forensic Recovery of Evidence Device) and software (Archivematica, ArchivesSpace, Archive-It, BitCurator, and others).
  • Develop training modules and train all processing archivists (within the Penn Libraries) to process born-digital materials within their collections and make them accessible to researchers.
  • Organize and attend training sessions for Archivematica, ArchivesSpace, Archive-It, BitCurator, and others in order to stay up-to-date on continually evolving media, preservation methodologies, and processing methodologies.
  • Process archival collections (analog, hybrid, and born-digital).
  • Work with curators (including the curator of civic engagement) and donors to ethically and responsibly acquire collections containing born-digital material and make recommendations for processing material.
  • Work within the wider Penn Libraries, archivists across the entire University system, and the archival community in order to educate and provide guidance for developing and enhancing a wider digital archives program, serve on library, university and/or professional committees, and serve as the special collections liaison to the web archiving program.
  • Write blog posts & participate in activities or events for the Kislak Center in order to promote collections and raise awareness to Penn faculty and students and the wider research community on Penn's efforts in the area of digital archives.
  • Integrate the Record Center's e-records workflow into Penn Libraries born-digital program so that records of enduring historical value are preserved and accessible to researchers
  • Perform duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required
  • An accredited master's degree in library and information science, with a concentration in archives
  • Experience using or administrating Archivematica, ArchivesSpace, and BitCurator
  • Experience using the Forensic Recovery of Evidence Device (FRED)
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse groups within an organization and the ability to communicate needs, goals, and vision
  • Knowledge of relevant standards for archival description and preservation, including Dublin Core, DACS, EAD, LCSH, and familiarity with other metadata standards
  • Knowledge of copyright, donor restrictions, and permissions related to processing digitized and born-digital material
  • Knowledge of techniques and technologies for recovering data from a wide variety of physical media, including floppy disks, hard drives, and other media of various ages and conditions
  • A minimum of 3-5 years' experience processing analog archival collections and a strong command of archival theory and best practices, especially as they relate to the issues posed by born-digital content
  • Fluency with Microsoft Office software, in particular Excel
  • The ability to work both independently and with others in a collaborative work environment
  • Willingness to promote collection material through social media and events
  • A commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion
