Assistant Professor – Department of Engineering

The Department of Engineering at James Madison University invites applicants who strive to be world-class, undergraduate engineering faculty for three open tenure-track Assistant Professor positions to start in August 2018. All fields of engineering will be considered.


The innovative Madison Engineering program is a community of scholars from across the engineering disciplines, committed to learning, excellence, respect, collaboration and generosity. Launched in 2008, the program offers a single ABET-accredited bachelor's degree in engineering crafted to engage students and stakeholders in the creation of solutions that benefit society. The curriculum integrates coursework in engineering design, engineering science, sustainability, engineering management and the liberal arts, features curriculum-spanning design projects, and culminates in a two-year-long engineering capstone project. Successful applicants will be able to teach throughout our undergraduate curriculum.


Currently the department has 15 full-time faculty members, approximately 420 students, and 7 staff members. Our strengths include a dedicated, energetic, collegial and diverse faculty, an engaged and invested student body, and strong administrative support. A typical teaching responsibility is five course sections per academic year, and mentoring one junior and one senior capstone project team. Compelling candidates will capitalize on university-wide initiatives (ethical reasoning; creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship; community and civic engagement; and sustainability) and departmental strategic initiatives (product design and innovation; process innovation; sustainable infrastructure; computation and data science; and engineering innovation). JMU values collaboration among academic units and provides unique opportunities for interdisciplinary, team-based teaching and scholarship. We value effective undergraduate teaching, as well as engaging students through project, research, and other professional development experiences. A Ph.D. in any engineering discipline or a related field is required of all applicants. Experience outside academia is strongly desired.
