Departmental Overview

UC Berkeley is seeking an accomplished candidate for the Executive Director, Center for Teaching and Learning, to join a creative, talented and entrepreneurial team within our Research, Teaching, and Learning (RTL) unit housed in the Division of Undergraduate Education. This position will serve in a leadership role as Berkeley engages in a fundamental change in the delivery of undergraduate education through the Discovery Initiative.

Position Overview
The Executive Director, Center for Teaching and Learning, reports to the Chief Academic Technology Officer with dotted lines to the Faculty Director of the Discovery Initiative and the Faculty Director for CTL to establish a vision in reshaping the undergraduate education with a focus at the cross section of technology, instruction, assessment and advising strategy. The Executive Director has significant responsibility for creating, shaping, and incubating new approaches to undergraduate education using digital technologies and experimentation with tools that support instruction and research. This position is uniquely positioned within RTL to take advantage of services across all units including Research IT, the Academic Innovation Studio (AIS), and other services, and must bring a thorough knowledge of strategic planning and organizational development to bear to effectively manage this complex, interconnected unit.

The Executive Director will oversee multiple, highly specialized and functional units with significant responsibility to achieve broadly stated goals for undergraduate instruction. These units include use of specialized technology within instructional design and media, as well as, the implementation of technical tools in support of Discovery. To this end, the position will mobilize a broad scope of services with daily management and oversight of the following units:
  • CTL pedagogy consulting
  • Campus assessment and accreditation services for Undergraduate Education
  • Faculty training and program coordination
  • Instructional design & media
  • Advising Strategy and Training (supporting over 1000 advising staff across campus)

This position will play a critical leadership role as UC Berkeley aims to redefine public education at a 21st century research university through the targeted experimentation with programs in order to enable engaged, personalized and lifelong learning for the entire Berkeley community and beyond. Through curricular innovation, leadership in digital engagement, and digital infrastructure at scale, we aim to transform the way we educate and engage our undergraduate students. With increased use of technology, new pedagogical approaches, and an increase in online instruction, we are seeking to expand our capacity in assessing how technology impacts student learning and the student experience.

Application Review Date

Responsibilities
  • In collaboration with UE leadership, determines instructional objectives, directs programs, develops strategies and policies, manages human, financial, and physical resources, and functions with a high degree of autonomy.
  • Provides strategic leadership with senior management and serves as a liaison to academic departments, professional organizations and administrative units of the University.
  • Convene faculty and staff partners to address critical issues and develop strategies that will enhance Berkeley's teaching and learning including working with other administrative units, Dean and Chairs, and the Academic Senate to develop appropriate policy and guidance around teaching and learning issues and the incumbent directly supports the Committee on Teaching.
  • Provides oversight and support for advising strategy, connecting advising practices to curricular innovation and Discovery.
  • Oversees the day-to-day operations and financial wellbeing of the pedagogical consultants, assessment team, campus Advising Strategy, and Digital Learning Services (DLS) as well as the recruitment, retention and supervision of staff who design and develop programming in support of all members of the Berkeley instructional community.
  • In coordination with the Chief Academic Technology Officer and the RTL Leadership Team provides vision and strategic oversight of instructional services (in person and online) within RTL.

Required Qualifications
  • Masters degree in Education (or PhD in Education) or and/or equivalent training or experience in a related field with a focus on technology, instruction, and student success.
  • Leadership experience in an organization focused on teaching and learning or student success including program building within a leading academic institution and administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial responsibility.
  • Minimum 4 years of staff managerial experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership in DEIBJ (diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and justice) as a manager and campus leader. Applying concepts of DEIBJ across all areas of work and responsibility.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and/or ability to learn the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL), with a focus on deep pedagogical knowledge of online and hybrid teaching. Must understand faculty culture and disciplinary approaches to instruction, academic personnel, and relevant campus policies to ensure proper alignment of faculty development programs.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Education and/or equivalent training or experience preferred.
  • 4 years or more of staff managerial experience.
  • Experience building collaborations between academia, industrial and/or governmental agencies including grant, and fundraising/revenue generation experience.

Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $200,000.00 - $225,000.00. For information on the comprehensive benefits package offered by the University visit:
