At this pivotal moment in Bucknell’s history, the University seeks a new Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences to serve as an articulate and passionate champion both of the College’s enduring commitment to the liberal arts and of its faculty, students, and staff. The Dean must be able to advocate persuasively for the power, relevance, and indispensability of the liberal arts, both as a leader on Bucknell’s campus and as a participant in the national conversation about the future of undergraduate education.

The Dean reports to the Provost and will serve as a creative and collaborative member of the Provost’s Council, which includes the Deans of the Colleges of Engineering and Management and the Dean of Students. Together with the Provost and with the faculty as a whole, the Dean strives to ensure that Bucknell fulfills its mission of educating students for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership characterized by continued intellectual exploration, creativity, and imagination.

Bucknell offers its students the personal attention of a small liberal arts college in combination with the resources and programs of the caliber of a private research university. Bucknell is ranked #32 among national liberal arts colleges (U.S. News & World Report, 2016), although its mission and offerings are broader than most other institutions on that list. Today, more than 3,500 undergraduates and 50 graduate students are enrolled at Bucknell.

The largest of Bucknell’s three colleges, the College of Arts & Sciences is the heart of the University. Comprised of the divisions of Arts and Humanities, Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and Social Sciences, the College includes approximately 290 faculty members in 31 departments and interdisciplinary programs.

Working collaboratively with these talented teacher-scholars, the Dean will act as a catalyst for the creation of a compelling vision for the future of the College of Arts & Sciences. The Dean will also support the University’s commitment to academic excellence by continuing to foster a broadly diverse and inclusive community, in keeping with the vision captured in the University’s 2014-2019 Diversity Plan. Reporting to Provost Barbara Altmann, the Dean must be appointable as a full professor at Bucknell and possess a track record of both administrative leadership and faculty advocacy.
