President

Union Institute & University seeks an accomplished, compassionate leader who will serve as the respected head of the university while partnering with the Board in implementing an aggressive, evolving strategy for growth. The new president will possess the experience, skills and drive required to help shape the future of this innovative and progressive institution, while exemplifying the character and ethics expected in a highly visible and trusted university and community leader.

Union is a regionally accredited, private, non-profit university, headquartered in the historic Beau Brummell building in Cincinnati, Ohio. Union also operates centers in Hollywood, Florida, Los Angeles and Sacramento in California, and Brattleboro, Vermont. Approximately 1,200 learners study in Union’s undergraduate degree completion program and its Master’s and Doctoral programs. More than 15,500 graduates, including 26 current or former university presidents, carry the Union commitment to social justice across the nation and the globe.

Birthed in 1964 as the Union for Research and Experimentation in Higher Education, this collaboration between ten colleges championed the belief that education is about achieving aspirations and goals, celebrating the very best of the human spirit, expanding knowledge, and transforming lives and communities. Union began as a concept, defined itself as a university without walls, engaging up to 34 colleges and universities, and ultimately became the independent, regionally-accredited university it is today. Through its revolutionary evolution the one constant has been a core belief in social justice as the guiding light of the educational experience.

The university employs 35 full-time faculty members and 299 part-time and affiliated faculty members. Faculty members are practitioner/scholars who embrace a culture of excellence in teaching, as well as the need for innovation and change in higher education. Union’s programs are designed to appeal to adult learners. The average age of Union’s current students is 41 and the age range is from 18 to 75 years. The student to faculty ratio is 8:1.

Union’s next president will be a results-oriented, creative and innovative visionary with successful experience in leadership positions in higher education. He/she will have the ability to build trust and respect across multiple constituencies (students, alumni, faculty, administration, trustees, community and strategic partners). The next president will have a genuine affinity for all aspects of fundraising, and enthusiasm to convey the Union vision and inspire transformative gifts. Experience with enrollment management in a complex educational organization that is tuition dependent is essential. He/she will possess genuine affinity for the student experience, especially as it relates to adult learners making a significant financial investment in the furtherance of their careers.
