Job Description Summary
Reporting to the head of the eResources Cataloging unit within the Collections and Scholarly Communications division, the eResources Metadata Librarian will provide oversight and expertise for establishing and maintaining online access to Penn Libraries' monographic, streaming, and integrating eResources.

Job Description

This managerial position supervises one cataloging support staff specialist while working closely with colleagues and vendors to improve the discovery and retrieval of eResources across Penn Libraries' online environments. This forward-thinking, collaborative role participates in the development and execution of local policies and initiatives involving eResources while upholding the Libraries' commitments to innovation, user-centered design, and the creation of diverse, equitable, and inclusive spaces and services.

Specific Duties:
*Analyze and standardize system-wide processes for selection of metadata sets from a wide variety of knowledgebases and external sources for quality, completeness, and timeliness.

*Create and establish optimal procedures for obtaining, reviewing, editing and batch-loading MARC records into the library catalog.

*Based on peer networks, develop best practices to collect, crosswalk, and prepare non-MARC metadata for ingestion into Alma ILS.

*Manage complex original MARC cataloging (foreign languages, less-common formats)

*Build mutually beneficial partnerships with vendors and service providers to aid Penn's continuously adaptive development in the field of collection development and scholarly communication. Work with colleagues to analyze systems configurations and workflows to support timely and accurate access to entitlements and strategize for large-scale projects, for example, data maintenance.

*Contribute to policy that builds greater programmatic depth by participating in cross-functional library working groups involving library metadata and/or new and evolving metadata standards such as BIBFRAME.

*Create extensible models of library metadata and eResource processes that could be replicated by other institutions, stay abreast of emerging trends and best practices of the same.

Required Qualifications

*A Master's degree from an ALA accredited library school and 1-2 years of professional experience.
*Experience cataloging in MARC in an integrated library system environment (preferably Alma) for resources in many material formats; comfortable with foreign languages and non-Roman scripts.
*Familiarity with batch record harvesting, editing and loading procedures and tools including MarcEdit, OpenRefine, Excel, and web-scraping techniques.
*Excellent analytical, organizational, and oral/written communication skills.
*Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in a team environment and the ability to effectively supervise, train and motivate staff.

*Experience or training in performing name, series or subject authority work.
*Experience working in an academic or research library.
*Understanding or knowledge of eResource lifecycles across library functions (discovery, cataloging, acquisitions) and how eResources are managed within integrated library systems (ILSs), knowledgebases, and third-party discovery systems.
