California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI) invites nominations and applications for the position of Vice President for Student Affairs (VPSA). Founded in 2002, CSUCI is the newest campus in the 23-campus California State University System. The next VPSA will be expected to help lead the institution through its third decade, promoting its maturation into the next phase of its development in a number of areas, such as supporting student-centered co-curricular and curricular engagement, continuing to embed the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout the Division's work to support the University's ongoing efforts to advance racial and social justice, and publishing valuable research to serve the people of Southern California and beyond.
The successful candidate for the VPSA position will be an effective and emotionally intelligent team-builder and a visionary leader with the proven ability to implement leading-edge programs and systems within a growing public university.
California State University Channel Islands: With an operating budget of roughly $140 million, CSUCI enrolls approximately 6,943 students, including 239 graduate and post-baccalaureate students (Fall 2020). At full capacity, CSUCI is expected to eventually serve 15,000 full-time equivalent students. CSUCI offers 26 undergraduate majors, seven graduate degrees, and a number of credential and certificate programs. Students have access to highly engaging curricular and co-curricular learning experiences, with outstanding faculty and staff, small class sizes, innovative applications of instructional technologies in their in-person, online, and hybrid classes, and other high-impact learning practices including service learning, undergraduate research, and study abroad opportunities in 20 countries. CSUCI has earned national distinctions because of its faculty, work environment, community service, student/faculty research, and efforts to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion. In 2021, CSUCI was ranked among the top 30 "Most Promising Places to Work in Student Affairs" for the seventh year in a row. The University has been recognized four times by The Chronicle of Higher Education as a "Great College to Work For." U.S News & World Report recently ranked CSUCI 41st for Regional Universities West, overall - and at 20th for Top Public Schools in that category and 17th for Social Mobility. CSUCI achieved the designation of Hispanic Serving Institution in 2009. In 2019, CSUCI was the first CSU campus and one of only nine institutions in the nation to receive the inaugural Seal of Excelencia , a prestigious, voluntary, and comprehensive certification granted by the Washington, D.C.-based organization, Excelencia in Education.
In keeping with the mission of the CSU system, CSUCI simultaneously provides a student-centered, world- class education while offering access to many groups traditionally excluded from higher education. Student demographics as of Spring 2022 include the following: Female (65.6%), Male (34.3%), Non-binary (0.1%); First Generation (61%); Low Income (51.1%); Hispanic/Latino(a) (56.6%); White (23.9%); Asian American (6.2%); African American (1.9%); Native American/Alaskan (0.1%); Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (0.3%); two or more ethnicities (3.8%); with 3.5% of students not reporting ethnicity.
The co-curricular experience at CSUCI is founded in research, best practices, and continual assessment of data with the goal of student success and closing the achievement gap at its core. The Division of Student Affairs (DSA) is a leader and critical partner on campus in providing a comprehensive student experience, working closely with Academic Affairs and other campus partners to realize the institutional goals for student success. In addition, the DSA continuously assesses co-curricular utilization data for various programs in relation to several student success metrics to evaluate the relationship between co-curricular engagement and improved student success. Under the Divisional areas of Campus Life ; Retention, Outreach, & Inclusive Student Services ; and Associated Students, Inc. ., Student Affairs at CSUCI provides programmatic and service opportunities designed to support its diverse student population.
CSUCI is located 4.5 miles south of the city of Camarillo in Ventura County, roughly 50 miles north of Los Angeles. As a regional campus in the CSU system, CSUCI serves all of Ventura County and the southern part of Santa Barbara County - a region that enjoys a rich mix of ethnic diversity. The local economy relies on six key industry sectors, including agriculture, manufacturing, construction, health services, professional/scientific/technical services, and leisure/hospitality.
The Vice President for Student Affairs: The Vice President for Student Affairs (VPSA) is responsible for the direction, programming, and planning of the University's Division of Student Affairs (DSA). The DSA offers services directly to students through its main programmatic areas: Campus Life, Retention, Outreach, & Inclusive Student Services, and Associated Students, Inc. This executive supervises the budget allocation and expenditure processes for the Division. They will participate significantly in recruiting, hiring, onboarding, and supervising staff, as well as in providing appropriate and ongoing professional development opportunities for staff.
The next Vice President for Student Affairs of CSUCI will exemplify collaborative leadership through the use of data, theoretical foundations, research, and best practices; exceptional interpersonal and communication dynamics; cognitive flexibility; and willingness and ability to effectively engage with students, faculty, and staff in various settings and contexts. Qualifications possessed by the ideal candidate include:
• an earned doctoral or other terminal degree from an accredited university;
• demonstrated experience working with faculty and academic departments to advance educational achievement;
• demonstrated record of increasing responsibility and significant leadership in student affairs at a four-year accredited university;
• demonstrated working knowledge of current trends and implementation of effective practices that result in increased rates of student engagement, retention, and graduation with specific focus on first generation and other historically underserved students.
