The Department of Molecular Biology and Microbiology at Tufts University School of Medicine ( is committed to expanding its virology program, with a particular emphasis on viral pathogenesis, and is seeking candidates at the Assistant Professor Tenure-Track level to fill multiple open positions. The successful candidates will build on the core strengths of the Department in microbial pathogenesis and physiology, molecular genetics, and microbial cell and structural biology, and focus on the study of viruses. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research on viral pathogenesis includes, but is not limited to, virus-host cell interactions, viral-immune system interplay, viral oncogenesis, and global health and emerging viruses. We seek candidates who use innovative approaches to investigate the mechanistic underpinnings of questions at the molecular, cellular, and organismal levels. We offer generous start-up support and a highly collaborative environment offering opportunities for both basic and translational research. Tufts is home to a variety of strong core facilities (e.g., in microscopy, genomics, and flow cytometry), and a joint appointment in other Tufts Departments/Schools is possible if appropriate. A joint appointment in a clinical department at Tufts Medical Center is also possible for individuals with M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degrees and clinical training.

Applicants should hold a Ph.D. and/or M.D. degree and have an excellent track record of research productivity. Successful candidates will be expected to establish and direct a thriving, high-quality independent research program, contribute to graduate and medical education, and to embrace the collegial ethos that is a keystone of the Department. Specific instructions for statement of research interests: To mitigate unconscious bias, the statement of research interests should not mention the laboratories, universities, or countries that the applicant trained in, nor names of journals in which their research has been published. To this end, bibliographic references for the statement of research interests should be numbered, and the reference list provided as a separate pdf file. Statements of research interests that do not adhere to this instruction will be returned for modification before consideration. The statement of research interests alone will be used as the first selection criteria, so that applicants are evaluated solely on their science, before other application documents are reviewed. Outstanding statements of research interest will have clearly articulated the scientific questions of interest, succinctly conveyed their importance to the field and to the broader pathogenesis community, and relayed innovative approaches that break open the challenging questions posed.
