Reporting to Penn Engineering's Director of Operational Services, the Director of Singh Center Operations is responsible for direct oversight of all the day-to-day operations and maintenance of the Singh Nanotechnology Center complex, including, but not limited to; facilities repairs and maintenance, cleanliness (housekeeping), mission continuity, lab/life safety, security, building access and key control.

Job Description

Reporting to Penn Engineering's Director of Operational Services, provide direct oversight of all the day-to-day operations and maintenance of the Singh Nanotechnology Center complex, including, but not limited to; facilities repairs and maintenance, cleanliness (housekeeping), mission continuity, lab/life safety, security, building access and key control. Identify, prioritize, and resolve building operational needs, working in conjunction with both internal unionized & external service providers to meet customer satisfaction requirements, departmental needs, and mission critical goals. Manage highly sophisticated, expensive, and hazardous equipment that requires an acute attention to detail and adherence to safety standards. Represent the Singh Center during the capital project process; perform diligence on A&E firms and contractors being considered for inclusion to ensure continuity of building operations. Plan, communicate and execute building infrastructure shutdowns with both internal and external stakeholders. Oversee renovation projects and facilities-related work requests - some of which can be highly sophisticated involving cutting edge technology supporting fabrication, lithography, characterization, and microscopy type spaces. Negotiate and manage contracts with vendors who support critical infrastructure for academic and research missions of the Singh Center. Regularly interact with upper-level FRES Administration to ensure service level agreements are being met. Reconcile maintenance expenditures on a monthly basis, working in conjunction with the FRES Area Manager. Develop creative solutions to resolve complex challenges in consultation with Penn Engineering and Singh Center leadership. Assist in scheduling and coordination of special event logistics - coordinate with various internal departments and entities external to the University. Maintain departmental database integrity for multi- year preventative maintenance plans, facility work orders, keys, etc. Act as a liaison to several life safety internal departments and external government institutions. Manage the intake process for critical deliveries and packages. Maintain 24/7 on call status for emergency situations and school needs such as lab lockouts, elevator entrapments, power loss, etc.


Bachelor's degree in Operations, Systems, Engineering, Project Management, or similar field and a minimum of seven years of progressive experience in a highly complex research, pharmaceutical, higher education, or similar industry, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Previous experience in the field of facility operations, maintenance or project management. Proven successful experience working with unionized trade personnel and contractors. Working knowledge of building utility, life safety, public safety and access systems. Detailed, proven experience with building automation systems. Prior supervisory experience. Strong mechanical aptitude, analytical, interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively within a team setting. Proven ability to remain calm in a fast paced and demanding environment. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and database management. Valid driver's license. Ability to be on 24/7 emergency call status. Experience with the handling, storage and transport of hazardous materials preferred. Experience leading a response to a life safety emergency preferred. Experience working with unionized housekeeping personnel preferred.
