Sheridan Dean of University Libraries, Archives and Museums

Search for the Sheridan Dean of University Libraries, Archives and Museums

Johns Hopkins University (JHU) seeks a visionary and accomplished library professional to serve as Sheridan Dean of University Libraries, Archives and Museums. This is an exceptional opportunity to lead a dynamic academic research library, at a consequential moment in its history.

JHU was founded in 1876 as the nation’s first research university. For more than 40 years it has led the nation in research spending among colleges and universities, investing in discovery, innovation, and informed risk-taking; historically it has been a place of intellectual firsts. The University gave birth to modern medical education and its school of medicine was endowed by the Women's Fund Committee, which conditioned its gift on the school's accepting women on the same basis as men. JHU was a pioneer in the serious investigation of the humanities and social sciences, including the conception of the first modern classics department. The Peabody Institute was the first academy of music established in the U.S., and Johns Hopkins University Press is the nation’s oldest, and one of the world’s largest, university presses.

The Sheridan Libraries, Archives and Museums encompass the Milton S. Eisenhower Library; the Brody Learning Commons; the Libraries Service Center; two historic house museums; collections at the John Work Garrett Library, the George Peabody Library, the Albert D. Hutzler Reading Room; and what will be a new JHU library located in the heart of the nation’s capital at 555 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW. Sheridan collections include more than 4.8 million physical volumes, and electronic resources that provide access to 1.6 million eBooks and more than 171,000 print and e-journals; the Sheridan Libraries Special Collections boast 400,000 rare books, including 300,000 volumes held at the George Peabody Library, a non-circulating special collections library open to the public and consistently ranked as one of the most beautiful libraries in the world. The annual budget is approximately $48 million.

Working with over 160 dedicated library employees, as well as colleagues throughout the University, the next Dean will have the singular opportunity to build and shape the future of the Libraries at Johns Hopkins. Several major initiatives are in the early design and/or planning phases; these include the complete redesign of the Milton S. Eisenhower Library (the University's principal research library), the new JHU library at 555 Pennsylvania Avenue, and the implementation of a new Library Management System. In addition, construction has begun on the expansion of the Libraries Service Center (the off-site shelving facility for the Sheridan Libraries) and is slated to be completed in late 2022.

Johns Hopkins seeks a leader who will set the strategic vision for the Sheridan Libraries, Archives and Museums and lead with energy and compassion. The Dean must possess the professional experience and insight to comprehend the strategic and financial requirements of a complex academic research library and the organizational and tactical skills to manage a complex and evolving organization. This individual will execute capital projects modernizing facilities and systems; strengthen the culture of the Libraries; lead in diversity, equity, and inclusion; champion the Libraries across campus and beyond; and generate and maximize the impact of financial resources.
