Fielding Graduate University seeks a Dean for Student Development to lead the creation and maintenance of a safe, healthy, and supportive environment to promote student retention and success. This position is based at our Santa Barbara, California headquarters.    

 

Summary

Under the direction of the Provost, the Dean for Student Development is responsible for fostering a culture that synthesizes the intellectual development of Fielding graduate students in a holistic way. The work of the Dean includes finding increasingly effective ways to: help highly motivated students manage the intense demands of their academic work; identify students with academic challenges and provide them with appropriate support; and increase visibility and student awareness of all available resources, helping students to take proactive responsibility for their own educational experiences. The Dean collaborates with the academic programs and other units within Fielding to ensure that the range of student services under the Dean’s oversight supports Fielding’s overall educational mission and its commitments to its students, from orientation through graduation. 

 

This position provides vision and leadership for a comprehensive array of academic advising and educational services designed to support student success including the Advising, Library Services, Academic Conferencing, and Institutional Review Board (IRB) units. The Dean for Student Development builds additional collaborations between the units the Dean oversees. The incumbent fosters and models an atmosphere of mutual respect, caring, collective engagement, accountability, and personal growth in a community of talent and diversity. This position serves as the voice and advocate for students among University leadership, and the incumbent serves on a variety of University-wide and governance teams. The Dean develops systemic ways to assess, improve, and renew student support programs, benchmarking them against best practices and gathering the data necessary for informed decision-making. The Dean is also expected to engage in scholarship, including publications, conference presentations, and the development of extramural grant proposals, as well as to participate in professional associations; the volume of scholarly activity will be negotiated with the Provost.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

The Dean for Student Development must be fully qualified to serve on the doctoral faculty. Applicants must possess an earned doctoral degree in one of the disciplines of the social sciences and experience working with doctoral students. Evidence of scholarly productivity is desirable, preferably including funded research or professional practice projects. The Dean for Student Development must be an experienced professional in graduate education, with at least five years of experience in graduate teaching, dissertation advising, program development, organizational leadership, and budget management. 

 

The ideal candidate will possess a professional, collaborative, and upbeat approach to their work. Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to prioritize and work under tight deadlines are essential to success in the role. The incumbent must be able to travel by plane, work weekends and alternative work hours as needed. Applicants should demonstrate computer literacy and skill working in a distributed/online learning environment. Applicants are expected to have proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite. Proficiency with any of the following is desirable: Zoom or other teleconferencing systems, EnrollmentRx/Salesforce, Ellucian (Datatel) Colleague, SharePoint, Shoretel or other VOIP phone systems, and TaskStream.
