Assistant Director - Residence Life

Southern Illinois University Carbondale invites applications and nominations for the position of Assistant Director of University Housing (Residence Life).  SIU Carbondale is a Carnegie doctoral research extensive public university with a diverse student population of over 16,000 students from throughout the United States and over 100 foreign countries.  The department of University Housing is a 39 million dollar operation consisting of over 4,000 bed spaces, apartment and residence hall communities, academic initiative programs including expansive Living-Learning Community programs, and a self-operated dining service.  Starting date is September 1, 2017.

The Position: Reporting directly to the Associate Director of University Housing – Residence Life, the Assistant Director is expected to lead an area of University Housing in its primary goal of establishing a positive, academically supportive environment for the residents of SIU Carbondale.   Primary responsibilities include supervising an area consisting of approximately 1800 residents in facilities including apartment-style housing, a high rise residence hall, and four low-rise residence halls.  This position is responsible for the supervision of full-time, master’s level Hall Directors, graduate Assistant Hall Directors and full-time administrative staff.

Job Responsibilities: Conduct long-range planning and goal-setting for a residential program designed to support and enhance the quality of student life. Coordinate formal training for full time Residence Life staff, graduate assistants and resident assistants. Provide crisis/emergency response and serve in an on-call rotation for the residential campus community. Serve as a conduct officer for the SIU Carbondale community. Participate in the recruitment and selection of full time and graduate staff.  Collaborate with staff in other departments within the University Community. Actively participate and provide flexible leadership in a dynamic and ever-changing department.

Qualifications and Requirements:  A master’s degree and at least four academic years’ live-in, full-time experience at the professional level (post-master’s degree) in campus housing programs at the time employment begins; A master’s degree in student personnel administration, higher education, college student personnel, or student affairs and master’s level professional staff supervision is preferred. Strong communication, organizational, interpersonal, and leadership skills are strongly preferred. A demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment is desired.

Compensation:  $48,000 per year ($4,000 per month) for 12 months.
