Dean of the College of Business

Austin Peay State University, in north central Tennessee, invites applications and nominations for the Dean of the College of Business. The Dean serves as the administrative and academic head of the College and reports to the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs.

The Opportunity

The Dean is charged with leadership of the College in the innovative and effective growth of enrollment, instruction, research, and public service, and the development of resources. A priority for the Dean will be attainment of AACSB International accreditation.  

While providing day-to-day leadership, supervision, and support for faculty and staff, the Dean also is accountable for fostering an effective and productive work place and learning environment. Responsible for overseeing and directing academic programs and community partnerships, the Dean serves as an integral member of the campus administrative team. 

Primary Responsibilities:

Administrative

  • Discuss with Department Chairs and Associate Dean the particular needs and concerns in their areas of responsibility.
  • Evaluate Department Chairs and Associate Dean in their administrative roles.
  • Work with the Provost office and other deans to develop policies, plans, and budget for the College of Business and other academic units.
  • Develop budgets for the College and its Departments.
  • Oversee instructional scheduling on the Clarksville campus, at Fort Campbell and other sites, and online.
  • Oversee space needs of the College (classrooms, labs, offices).
  • Consider faculty and student complaints and grievances.
  • Evaluate student requests for course substitutions and overloads.
  • Undertake various projects and duties as assigned by the Provost.
  • Represent the College to constituencies on and off campus.
  • Participate in fundraising and pursue grants to enhance financial resources.
  • Ensure administrative requirements are met with regard to timely processing of payroll documentation, submission of budget revisions and evaluation of faculty and staff within the College.
  • Work with the Department Chairs and appropriate divisions of the University to develop materials and events for promotion of the business programs.

Faculty Development and Evaluation 

  • Assist Departments in hiring and deploying faculty to meet the College’s mission.
  • Assist Departments in creating and maintaining opportunities for faculty development in instruction and research.
  • Supervise Departments in developing departmental mission statements and personnel practices consistent with University policy.
  • Schedule and review evaluations of faculty for promotion, tenure, retention, and merit.
  • Preside over relevant College personnel committees.

Academic Development

  • Pursue long-range planning in light of University and College missions.
  • Engage the faculty and staff in continuing improvement of the research, and public service.
  • Strive to improve the technological resources and competence of faculty and staff to meet more effectively the mission of the College.
  • Assist in the development of assessment criteria and outcome measures to assure goal completion.
  • Chair the College Curriculum of recommendations and decisions of this body.
  • Join the Provost and other Deans in planning, developing, and evaluating programs.
  • Lead the College in achieving and maintaining AACSB accreditation.

External Relations

  • Serve as the official representative of the College in external organizations, such as AACSB, Southern Business Dean’s Association, and Clarksville/Area Chamber of Commerce.
  • Work with the APSU Office of Development on fundraising activities and the Office of Grants and Research to seek grants for the College of Business.
  • Work with the APSU Office of Alumni Relations to maintain relationships with graduates.
  • Engage in other activities to enhance relationships with the local and regional business communities.

 

Qualifications - Candidates must have an earned doctoral degree in a business discipline. Documented classroom teaching experience, scholarly research, professional achievement, and service within the context of a comprehensive, public university that merits the rank of full professor are required.

Other qualifications include:

  • Documented evidence of current and effective administrative experience at the chair level or higher with an AACSB accredited business program.
  • Documented evidence of building positive relations with the local/regional business community and alumni, including successful fundraising.
  • Commitment to further the goals of APSU for enrollment growth and retention, student success, innovative curriculum design, enhancement of financial resources through fundraising and grant activities, and AACSB accreditation.
  • Commitment to further APSU values for diversity, cross-cultural/international education, shared governance, civic engagement, effective integration of technology, and online learning.

Essential Abilities

  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with various internal and external stakeholders and to interact in an effective and appropriate manner with diverse populations.
  • Ability to efficiently manage the functions and details essential to the operation of the College.
  • Ability to develop both short-term and long-range plans for the College to successfully attain University goals and objectives.
  • Ability to provide leadership for the infusion of technology into academic programs.
  • Ability to provide leadership for the planning and administration of the academic budgets within the College so that resources are allocated and expended in accordance with the University’s long-range plan.
  • Ability to develop innovative academic programs that fulfill the mission of the College and adhere to resource constraints.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to effectively supervise personnel and complete all associated personnel actions in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Ability to develop and interpret plans and policies.

The College of Business was established as the School of Business and Economics in 1968 as a result of a university-wide reorganization plan. The School admitted its first students in the fall of 1968.  

The School later developed into the College of Business, which today enrolls approximately 900 undergraduate majors and approximately 70 graduate students.  The College’s two academic departments are Accounting, Finance, and Economics and Management, Marketing, and General Business, with on-campus and online classes. 

The business programs are known for their rigor, and students benefit from small class sizes and strong support from the dedicated and highly qualified faculty. The College has 23 full-time faculty, including two distinguished chairs of excellence. 

The Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) program offers majors in Accounting, Management, Marketing, and Finance. Students have the option of either majoring in Finance with a concentration in Economics, or majoring in Management with a concentration in International Management. Additional minors are available in Decision Sciences and Real Estate.

The Master of Science in Management (MSM) program is designed for students with a bachelor’s degree in any field and emphasizes leadership and managerial skills for the global workplace. Students in this 30-hour program can graduate within 12 months. 

Classes are conducted on the Clarksville, Tenn., campus, as well as at a satellite campus at Fort Campbell military base. 

The College also has a significant online presence with web-based sections of most undergraduate and graduate courses. The College contributes courses to the Social Science Core. 

The College of Business recently received a gift to build a Trading Room.  Construction for this project is scheduled to commence this year. 

Austin Peay State University is a four-year public, master’s-level university offering more than 56 majors and 63 different concentrations to more than 10,000 students. The Clarksville campus of the University, located in downtown Clarksville, has been used for educational purposes for more than 180 years and on which the buildings of five colleges have stood.

The university has seven colleges and schools: College of Arts and Letters; College of Behavioral and Health Sciences, which includes the School of Nursing; College of Business; the Martha Dickerson Eriksson College of Education; College of Graduate Studies; and College of Science and Mathematics. Classes are taught on campus and online.

In addition to the Clarksville campus, APSU has a new Education Center at Fort Campbell that offers day and evening classes in 15 programs of study at the Associate’s, Bachelor’s, and Master’s levels. It also partners with Volunteer State Community College to bring educational opportunities to students at the Highland Crest Campus in Springfield. 

The university has nearly 300 full-time faculty members, 90 percent of whom hold the doctorate or other appropriate terminal degree in their respective fields. 

The university has two Centers of Excellence. The Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts captures the uniqueness of the University’s tradition in the liberal arts, combining the institution’s well-established disciplines of music, creative writing, art, and theatre. The Center of Excellence for Field Biology is a major research component of the University in a 300-square-mile forested preserve between Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley.

Austin Peay Athletics participates in the Ohio Valley Conference, NCAA Division I sports. The department is a traditional powerhouse in men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, volleyball and men’s golf. The University competes in 14 sports.
