Lamar University (LU) invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean, College of Arts and Sciences (CAS). Reporting to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean is the senior academic and administrative officer of the College and is responsible for providing the intellectual leadership and vision necessary for setting strategic, operational and financial directions. This is an exceptional opportunity for a strategic and capable academic administrator to lead a college devoted to excellence in serving the educational needs of the diverse population of Texas and the world beyond.

As the largest and most inclusive academic unit within the university, the College of Arts and Sciences contributes significantly to the cultural and academic characteristics that distinguishes Lamar University as a Member of the Texas State University System. The CAS programs perform at the highest levels with constant enthusiasm for excellence. The College is comprised of twelve academic departments, many of which house multiple programs and disciplines that offer students a combined thirty-four undergraduate and graduate degree choices. In addition, the College includes a variety of interdisciplinary, pre-professional, and teacher preparation programs that cross educational boundaries. While providing a majority of the courses included within the university’s Core Curriculum, the College likewise offers hundreds of specialized courses to support its baccalaureate and graduate degree programs.

Lamar University (LU) is a public, Carnegie Doctoral Research University, located in Southeast Texas. With more than 15,000 students, LU is among the fastest growing Texas colleges and universities. The University offers more than 100 programs of study leading to bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. The 270-acre campus in Beaumont is about 90 miles east of Houston and about 25 miles west of Louisiana. The University has been nationally recognized for the quality of its core curriculum and the diversity of its student body. Compared to other universities near Houston, Lamar University’s small class sizes and a low student-to-faculty ratio allow students to build meaningful relationships with expert faculty who truly care about their success.

The ideal candidate for this position will be a visionary, transformative, inclusive and decisive leader with the ability to act as a catalyst for creativity, innovation, collaboration and interdisciplinary research and instruction. The applicant will have:

  • An earned doctorate with at least five years in an administrative position with duties and responsibilities for academic and fiscal management;

  • Documented accomplishments in teaching, research and service at a level to be appointed as a tenured full professor in one of the academic departments of the College of Arts and Sciences;

  • Possess an understanding of the academic landscape and recognize the changes occurring in modes of scholarship and teaching;

  • A leadership style characterized by flexibility, inclusiveness, innovation, integrity and transparency; and

  • A demonstrated commitment to enhancing a college that values and practices diversity and inclusion, affirmative action and equal opportunity.
