Dean, Farmer School of Business
Miami University invites nominations and applications for the Dean and the Mitchell Rales Chair of Business Leadership of the Farmer School of Business. The Farmer School of Business, Miami’s business-focused academic division, opened in 1927 and is committed to offering a premier business program that provides students with the lifelong ability to acquire knowledge and translate it into responsible action in a competitive global environment. The School is currently ranked among the top 40 business school programs in the nation by Business Week magazine and 16th among all public Universities.
Identified as a “Public Ivy”, Miami has long been recognized by such publications as U.S. News & World Report for an unusually strong commitment to undergraduate teaching. This commitment to teaching is demonstrated in the University’s record of exceptional retention and graduation rates—some of the highest among NCAA Division I schools. Miami University is a public university located in Oxford, Ohio (35 miles north of Cincinnati), with regional locations in Hamilton, Middletown, and West Chester, Ohio, and the John E. Dolibois European Center in Luxembourg. A liberal education core complements the more specialized studies of the majors. Current enrollment includes almost 17,000 undergraduates and over 2,700 graduate students on the Oxford campus. Miami offers bachelor degrees in over 130 areas of study and master's degrees in almost 60 areas; the University also offers a number of doctoral degrees.
In 1992, Richard Farmer and his wife, Joyce Barnes Farmer, provided the cornerstone gift to the School of Business. In 2005, they announced a leadership gift through the Farmer Family Foundation, with funds designated to underwrite the construction of the Farmer School of Business building and the balance earmarked for faculty support. The School’s $65 million dollar facility was completed in 2009 and features 210,000 square feet of innovative classroom designs and the latest technology, including 30 total classrooms and 136 faculty offices to house all six departments as well as a student commons. In 2016, an additional leadership gift, largest in the school’s history, was announced through the Farmer Family Foundation to support all elements of the Farmer School of Business, including its faculty, students, emerging programs, and curricula enhancements.
The Farmer School currently offers bachelor and master’s degree programs. Bachelor degree majors are offered in eight areas: accountancy, business-economics, finance, information systems, interdisciplinary business management, management and leadership, marketing, and supply chain and operations management, as well as an analytics co-major. A number of minors are also offered. Undergraduate enrollment at the School totals 4,168 and 160 graduate students. The School has almost 45,000 alumni living worldwide.
Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean of the Farmer School of Business also holds the title of Mitchell Rales Chair of Business Leadership and is the academic, administrative, and community leader of the School. In an era of change in higher education, the Dean will be responsible for working with the faculty to develop and implement a financially sustainable strategy that leverages and optimizes the Farmer School’s existing programs and keeps the School at the forefront of undergraduate business-related education and research. The Dean provides intellectual and creative leadership, collaborates with academic programs in planning, review, and development activities, and works cooperatively and closely with faculty and administrative staff, other deans, and University leaders. The Dean will also be expected to partner with the division of University Advancement and Miami University Foundation to lead fundraising for the School. The next Dean will be responsible for determining a strategic and tactical plan for the Farmer School that moves the School and its constituencies to higher levels of achievement and success. With the University’s transition to a Responsibility Centered Management (RCM) approach for budgeting, the Dean will have significant responsibility for allocating resources and reinvesting financial assets generated by the School. The ideal candidate will have an earned doctorate in an appropriate field and be eligible for appointment at the rank of Professor, or equivalent experience appropriate to the Dean’s role and responsibilities.
Nominations and expressions of interest will be received until a list of candidates is put forward for final consideration.
Review of candidates will begin immediately. Applications and nominations may be sent to:
