ASSISTANT CONTROLLER

Position Summary: Reporting to the Controller, the Assistant Controller provides leadership to and supervises the Managers of assigned units in the Office of the Controller. Duties include setting and overseeing strategic direction, including continuous process improvements, accurate and timely financial records and reporting and ensuring high performing services to the University community. The Assistant Controller provides leadership over the creation, amendment and compliance structure of timely, user-friendly and value-added university business policies and procedures. Represents the Office of the Controller on regular and ad hoc committees and attends meetings that require participation from the Office of the Controller, as delegated.

 

Minimum Requirements: Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree in Accounting; five to eight years of progressively more responsible and expansive work experience in accounting and associated systems, financial reporting and analysis (including experience with financial statement preparation and working closely with external auditors), customer service, management and supervision, and leadership; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. CPA certification is required.

 

Desired Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field (a MBA is preferred). Minimum of ten years of progressively more responsible and expansive work experience in: supervising, developing, and evaluating professional staff; extensive knowledge and demonstrated skills in matters related to accounting and financial policies, procedures and reporting in the higher education industry; experience in interpreting and implementing Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) accounting standards; knowledge of tax issues impacting higher education, including the Unrelated Business Income Tax; significant experience working with information technology staff to manage complex finance and accounting information systems; strong communication, interpersonal and problem solving skills; and a demonstrated successful leadership record, including leading a high-performing team of managers and staff.
