Involves oversight in planning, developing, implementing and advising on programs, services, activities and processes for students in their non-academic life at the university, including in public service, student conduct and community standards, identity-based experiences, sexual violence, leadership development, student governments, student businesses, student organizations, and other student resource center areas.

Under the general direction of the Vice Provost for Student Success, the Assistant Vice Provost for Student Development and Engagement/Dean of Students (AVP SDE/DOS) provides leadership for a portfolio of departments and services. Functional areas reporting to the AVP SDE/DOS include: SOMeCA (Student Organization Advising Resources, Student Media, Cultural Arts and Diversity), Student Conduct and Community Standards, Slug Support, Dean of Students Events and Facilities, and Dean of Students Administration. The AVP SDE/DOS plays a leading role in creating and maintaining a healthy campus environment through services, programs, and innovative co-curricular activities that encourage a sense of community among students, faculty, and staff. The AVP SDE/DOS facilitates an inclusive and responsive campus environment. The AVP SDE/DOS is responsible for developing and maintaining effective working relationships with students, campus administrative leadership, and faculty. Through a collaborative process, the AVP SDE/DOS plans and implements strategic initiatives, develops partnerships and collaborations, resolves issues, and responds to crisis incidents. The AVP SDE/DOS stewards resources and allocates funding in an impartial way to support institutional priorities. The AVP SDE/DOS serves as a liaison between campus administration, student governing bodies, and student organizations. The AVP SDE/DOS serves as a resource to all students, both graduate and undergraduate, and is available to assist with problem solving and issues management. The AVP SDE/DOS works in close collaboration with the AVC CHES and the College Administrative Officers on matters relating to student conduct, retention, support and success.

The Division of Student Success provides campus-wide coordination and leadership for student success programs and activities across departments, divisions, colleges, and administrative units. The Student Success Division includes the Student Success Evaluation & Research Center (SSERC), the Student Success Centers which provide outside the classroom academic and co-curricular services and resources, Student Health Services, and the Dean of Students Office.

The Dean of Students Office at UC Santa Cruz promotes personal development and successful navigation of campus life thereby strengthening the student experience. This is accomplished by facilitating partnerships, developing policies, creating meaningful opportunities, and providing direct support to cultivate a vibrant, healthy, and inclusive UCSC community. The Dean of Students Office envisions a university where every student has limitless opportunities and support to reach their highest goals for themselves and society.

Qualifications include:
- Advanced management or professional degree required; minimum requirement is satisfied by a Master's degree in Management, Higher Education Student Personnel, Student Development, Student Affairs, Education or other related field.

- Demonstrated ability to manage a complex organization at an institution of higher education, working with a highly diverse staff and student body.

- Ability to conduct strategic planning, budgeting, and forecasting.

- Ability to design and oversee implementation of student and staff services and programs in an efficient and cost-effective manner leading to continuous improvement of services.

- Knowledge of national practices and philosophy of student development theory, including learning and involvement theories, leadership theories, and issues related to access, equity, and retention.
