The University of CA San Diego, seeks a proven, collaborative, and visionary leader as Director of Online Learning, a unit within the Teaching + Learning Commons. The Director will provide leadership and support for the development and implementation of an evolving vision for online learning at UC San Diego that is aligned with the university's mission and institutional goals, demonstrates exemplary online pedagogical practice, and uses current and emerging instructional technologies. The goal is to provide relevant and valuable learning experiences for faculty and students, including pre-college, undergraduate, adult professionals, programs, alumni and new audiences worldwide.

The Director of Online Learning will collaborate with other units within the Teaching + Learning Commons, administrators, faculty, staff, and key campus partners such as Educational Technology Services (ETS) in the development, delivery, and support of online programs and courses. The Director will provide leadership, innovation and support for the development, use, and evaluation of innovative instructional technologies to advance online teaching and learning. The Director will identify technology-related educational priorities, projects, and opportunities for our constituents on-campus and off-campus. This may involve completely online courses (MOOCs, or Massive Open Online Courses) as well as SPOCs (Small Private Online Courses), hybrid, face-to-face courses and completely face-to-face courses that integrate online and other technologies, and other modalities incorporating technologies developed in the future.
The selected candidate will work to increase the number of online graduate professional programs and certificates, the number of online graduate and undergraduate courses, and the number of faculty choosing to integrate innovative instructional technologies into their teaching in either fully online or hybrid courses. The ideal candidate will have a Phd or EdD in a related field, successful record of leadership in higher education, an excellent grasp of the online learning landscape nationally and globally, including licensing and other legal requirements. Knowledge of current and emerging technologies, support systems to enhance online education, and experience in developing and scaling online learning programs are desirable. The ideal candidate will have successful online teaching experience, as well as an applied understanding of educational psychology in online settings, and experience with evidence-based practices in creating and assessing online materials.

UC San Diego offers a comprehensive set of academic programs and the candidate must be able to work collaboratively with different academic departments and with administrative units that collectively support the University's instruction, research and service missions.

Such activities include both campus-focused educational efforts as well as educational efforts which share UC San Diego's expertise with those beyond the confines of our campus and beyond the rolls of our matriculated student body (e.g. via MOOCs or other outward facing educational activities).

Under the general supervision of the Faculty Director of the Teaching + Learning Commons, the Director of Online Learning is expected to: promote teaching and learning as ongoing and collaborative processes of inquiry, experimentation, and reflection; contribute to the research on pedagogical issues that impact teachers and students in higher education; and promote a university culture that encourages the creation of learning environments in which diverse students can excel, thus advancing UC San Diego's mission as a student-centered public research university.

The Director of Online Learning is a full-time, 12-month academic administrative appointment.

Inward-Facing Educational Functions
● Provides collaborative leadership and expertise to faculty, academic units and programs in the development of online courses and programs that meet WASC standards, comply with authorization standards and are ADA compliant.

● Assists faculty with the development of online courses to support online learning for increasing numbers of UC San Diego students, primarily for high demand courses.
● Administers educational activities for faculty around online and technology-enhanced teaching including seminars and workshop series on technologies for supporting learning.
● Collaborates with Teaching and Learning Commons staff to help faculty and students identify technological approaches for meeting pedagogical needs.
● Collaborates with ETS technology staff to understand, communicate and provide support and access to technological tools and resources to implement education programs and supports for learning
● Assists faculty with the development of teaching competencies, pedagogical practices, and assessment strategies required of high quality online courses by connecting them to appropriate pedagogical and technical advising offered by the Teaching + Learning Commons and ETS.
● Works with various internal units to break down logistical or technological barriers to success for non-campus-based online students (from application to enrollment to graduation/completion).
● Contributes to and supports scholarly research on the assessment of online and technology enhanced educational tools, and disseminates the results of that research to faculty.
● Attends professional teaching and learning conferences related to online education.
● Coordinates campus-level online and technology-enabled pedagogical efforts (e.g. peer instruction, LearningGlass projects)
● Oversees budgeting and program funding for on-campus programs to support online education including the research and assessment of technology and online programs for improving student outcomes.
● Manages and supports campus-level innovation opportunities related to online learning (e.g., on-campus innovation funding grants, advertising and supporting UCOP initiatives).
● Serves as project coordinator and administrator for campus-level technology and online educational efforts.
● Serves as advisor and facilitator for division or departmental technology on online educational efforts.

Outward-Facing Educational Functions
● Serves as primary Point of Contact with MOOC partners (e.g., Coursera and edX) at high-level relationship management and ongoing operational meetings.
● Serves as campus Point of Contact with administrative leaders at other universities heading online efforts (e.g., Vice Provosts, Deans, Associate Presidents, Directors).
● Attends MOOC-related conferences, including annual MOOC partner conferences for EdX and Coursera.

● Serves as Point of Contact w/platforms (esp. policy, legal, RFPs, new courses) and in communication with campus regarding opportunities for UCSD faculty to contribute to MOOC programs and projects.
● Hosts special events & meetings regarding MOOC activities (e.g., CEO campus visits, celebrations of activities of faculty).
● Facilitates and manages external interactions (collaboration with other universities per mutual benefit from MOOC courses; working with external MOOC instructors).
● Leads marketing and communication efforts to increase revenue and value of MOOC offerings.
● Oversees research and assessment efforts to understand the impact of outward-facing educational activities.
● Serves as project coordinator and administrator for MOOC and high-profile primarily online educational efforts.
● Serves as leadership and point of contact for UCSD-led external educational activities enabled by online operationalization including K-12, programs to support university readiness, bridge to UCSD programs, alumni education, life-long learning for California residents, re-training education, etc.
● Oversees budgeting and reporting of online learning, including financial agreements and revenue disbursements from MOOC offerings, under the auspices of The Commons.

Policy and Strategy Functions
● Integrates and aligns online learning initiatives with mission and activities of The Commons and campus Strategic Plan.
● Serves and advises on industry, national, international, and MOOC-led advisory committees, policy and strategic planning groups.
● Serve on various university committees, task forces, and other groups as an advisor and advocate for high quality online teaching and learning programs and courses.
● Serves as liaison with relevant Academic Senate committees to discuss policy and practice implications of online course creation.
● Develops strategy and vision for use of online and other technological tools to enhance education, in collaboration with The Commons, Academic Affairs, and the Chancellor's Office, including:
○ Identification of short-term, medium-term, and long-term opportunities for deployment of online and technological tools to enhance educational opportunities for learners.
○ Identification of resource needs and revenue generation opportunities.
○ Identification for existing policies or need to develop new policies.
● Consults with, educates, and advises academic units, administrative units, and faculty across all segments of the campus regarding:
○ Opportunities for developing online and technology enhanced educational content.
○ The process of content generation.
○ Legal and copyright implications of online content creation.
○ Requirements for academic credit for online courses.
○ Revenue sharing policies.
