Dean, Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism

Chancellor Félix V. Matos -Rodríguez and the Board of Trustees of the City University of New York (CUNY) invite nominations and applications for the next dean of the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY (Newmark J-School).

For more than 15 years, the Newmark J-School has been equipping exceptional students with the core values, time-honored skills and innovative tools to reveal and report the truth. There is the need to prepare the next generation—a generation that is committed to reporting on contemporary realities with precision, care and eloquence, and that cares deeply about the values and civic purpose that make journalism indispensable to a democratic society.

From its inception, the school’s mission continues to center on expanding diversity in newsrooms across the nation and provide an affordable graduate education to those who might otherwise be unable to add their voices and perspectives to the media. Small classes and close faculty contact are hallmarks of the school, as are the wide array of content and media skill courses offered in its two masters programs. Graduates are well-equipped to tell stories that matter and to become catalysts for justice and meaningful change. Alumni work at hundreds of news organizations across the nation. They are active in keeping the school on the cutting edge and helping new graduates find employment.

CUNY is the nation's largest urban public university system, comprising 25 campuses: 11 senior colleges, seven community colleges, one undergraduate honors college and six postgraduate institutions spread across New York City’s five boroughs. A transformative engine of social mobility, CUNY is a critical component of the lifeblood of the city. Founded in 1847 as the nation's first free public institution of higher education, CUNY today serves 260,000 degree-seeking students of all ages and awards about 55,000 degrees each year. An additional 200,000 are enrolled in continuing education classes. More than 80% of CUNY graduates stay in New York, contributing to all aspects of the city's economic, civic and cultural life, diversifying and strengthening the workforce in every sector. The university’s historic mission—to provide a first-rate public education to students, regardless of means or background—continues to this day.

The next dean will have a strong journalism background and be prepared to provide strategic and intellectual leadership for the school while fully advancing CUNY's mission of academic excellence and social mobility. Additionally, the dean will be ready to offer adept and collaborative operational leadership of a professional school in a complex institutional environment grounded in shared governance.

The dean will be a leader in advancing institutional diversity, equity and inclusion, and will work to ensure the school’s continued growth and success by attracting new philanthropic support, developing strategic partnerships to diversify revenue and engage all segments of the school community.
