Job Description Summary
Under general supervision and in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, as well as federal, state, and local regulations and internal University policies and procedures, the Senior Payroll Accountant is responsible for all financial accounting matters related to payroll. This includes general ledger account reconciliation, analysis, and substantiation; bank account reconciliations; payroll escheat process and due diligence; and all posting, reviewing, and balancing of general ledger activity related to payroll.

Job Description

Accurately reconcile month payroll liability and withholding accounts; prompt identification and resolution of reconciling items; precise recording of adjusting entries as needed. Effective and timely service delivery and customer service focus to a wide variety of stakeholders and customers across the University. Takes responsibility for all work activities and personal actions; follows through on commitments; implements decisions that have been agreed upon; maintains confidentiality with sensitive information; acknowledges and learns from mistakes without blaming others; recognizes the impact of one's behavior on others.

Accurately reconcile monthly payroll expense accounts; prompt identification and resolution of reconciling items; precise recording of adjusting entries as needed. Expresses oneself clearly and effectively when speaking and/or writing to individuals or groups; listens attentively; ensures that information is understood by all parties; shares information in a timely manner using the most appropriate method; presents well-organized information in a group setting. Maintains a constructive, open dialogue with others and speaks with candor. Acts professionally and calmly at all times when interacting with others; consistently demonstrates concern and courtesy towards colleagues and customers; treats all people respectfully; takes personal responsibility for correcting problems; follows up with individuals to ensure satisfaction with the level of service they have received. Calculation of payroll expense and employee benefits related to health affiliates CPUP and CHOPPA; preparation of monthly estimated billings and true-ups; communication with health affiliates to resolve any billing discrepancies. Generates creative approaches to addressing problems and opportunities; identifies and weighs options, makes sound decisions after reviewing all relevant information; anticipates and plans for potential problems; takes calculated risks; recognizes impact of solutions.

Seeks out relevant information before making decisions. Anticipates problems and thinks ahead about next steps. Generates original ideas and develops creative approaches for addressing problems or opportunities.

Responsible accurate and timely payroll escheat process, including identification of uncashed checks and follow-up with payees for uncashed checks over 90 days; identification of checks to be reported to the respective states and upload to unclaimed property software; reconciliation of amounts to be reported to the states; reissue of claimed property. Works collegially with others, cooperating in both interpersonal and team relationships; fosters enthusiasm and maintains mutual trust, candor and respect. If applicable, manages groups effectively and builds partnerships with others. Fosters a sense of collegial partnership and teamwork.

Ensure pay is processed accurately and on-time and in compliance with federal, state and local requirements; initiate payroll processing; ensure all calculations and recalculations are completed; complete and settle payroll process.

Accurate and precise monthly reconciliation of payroll bank account; identification and resolution of reconciling items; recording of adjusting entries as needed.

Calculate and record monthly payroll-related accruals, including salary and unused vacation accruals.

Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree or minimum four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Minimum of five (5) to seven (7) years' related and relevant experience required.

Strong payroll reporting and analytical skills.

Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.

Demonstrated proficiency with Workday (preferred).

Payroll tax experience required. Multi-State payroll tax experience preferred.

Working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, practices, and procedures.

Demonstrated ability to be detail-oriented and accurate. Able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously. Demonstrated organizational and prioritization skills, along with the ability to work within tight and often conflicting deadlines.

Must be flexible, show effective judgement, discretion and have the ability to handle confidential financial matters.

Work effectively in a highly matrixed and decentralized environment with the ability to navigate through ambiguity and demonstrate appreciation and support for diversity, inclusion and belonging in a constantly evolving academic/higher education environment.
