The Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics and the UPENN High-throughput Screening Core (HTSC) in the Perelman School of Medicine (PSOM) is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Research Specialist D to join its research team and directly work on in vitro, pre-clinical projects related to precision oncology, discovery of antivirals for pandemic pathogens (SARS-CoV-2), epigenetics and therapeutics against targets in cellular senescence and age related disease, and characterization of vaccine induced immunity against viruses (e.g., Influenza, SARS-CoV-2). The primary mission of the HTSC is to provide the PSOM community with high-throughput screening capabilities to identify drugs or genes that modulate signaling pathways, cellular phenotypes, and protein function in models of human disease.

Job Description

The Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics and the UPENN High-throughput Screening Core (HTSC) in the Perelman School of Medicine (PSOM) is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Research Specialist D to join its research team and directly work on in vitro, pre-clinical projects related to precision oncology, discovery of antivirals for pandemic pathogens (SARS-CoV-2), epigenetics and therapeutics against targets in cellular senescence and age related disease, and characterization of vaccine induced immunity against viruses (e.g., Influenza, SARS-CoV-2). The primary mission of the HTSC is to provide the PSOM community with high-throughput screening capabilities to identify drugs or genes that modulate signaling pathways, cellular phenotypes, and protein function in models of human disease.

The Research Specialist D responsibilities will include
  • Independently plan/design, develop of standard protocols, perform and troubleshoot diverse cell-based and biochemical experiments in 96-well/384-well microtiter plates;
  • operate laboratory robotics during high-throughput siRNA/chemical screens;
  • analyze and interpret results including statistical analysis in Graphpad, Excel, Spotfire;
  • and prepare preliminary reports for review with the Directors and Users.

The candidate will perform a variety of complex to advanced biochemical and cellular assays, including tissue culture of human and non-human primary cells and established cell lines; enzymatic fluorescent assays, luminescent viability and luciferase reporter gene assays, use of established, ELISA, siRNA transfection, and fluorescence microscopy. A specific focus will be on high-content/phenotypic assay development and creation of computational sequences to analyze data from these assays. The ability to perform other basic molecular assays such as protein and DNA gel electrophoresis and western blotting is preferred. Additional responsibilities will include maintaining articulate documentation of daily tasks and maintenance of the laboratory's databases and inventory (i.e. supplies, reagents, safety compliance, and equipment).

The ideal candidate must have a proven ability to work in a collaborative, team-oriented research environment and possess excellent organizational and communication skills to directly interface and share data with the Directors and scientific staff from laboratories using the core. The Research Specialist D must be able to identify and resolve technical problems and independently use analytical decision-making skills to execute experiments. There is an expectation that the Research Specialist D will read relevant scientific literature to develop depth of knowledge within the project, assist in preparations of presentations, and in writing of original manuscripts.

Qualifications

A Masters in Biology, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry or in adjacent field and at least 5 years of post-degree bench laboratory experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience required. Previous work with BSL2 cell culture is required. Strong scientific background, working knowledge of commonplace molecular and cell biology techniques, ability to learn new techniques; ability to follow existing protocols; ability to develop novel protocols and methods; outstanding interpersonal interaction skills, excellent written and oral communication skills, problem recognition and solving, and organizational skills.
