Job Description Summary
The Sr. Industrial Hygienist B position supports campus and laboratory health and safety under the direction of the Associate Director of Industrial Hygiene and Laboratory Safety and is responsible for identifying, evaluating, and controlling health hazards in the workplace. The industrial hygienist will independently perform laboratory and shop safety audits, industrial hygiene monitoring, and ergonomic assessments, and will perform exposure assessments and incident reporting in coordination with Occupational Medicine and Risk Management. In addition, the position oversees the Hazard Communications and Hearing Conservation programs and will interpret and support compliance with other Occupational Safety and Health Administration, federal and state regulatory requirements. The industrial hygienist writes technical reports summarizing findings and provides compliance direction to departments. In addition, the position provides hazard and risk assessments to faculty, students, and staff, and develops and presents EHRS training. The industrial hygienist is a member of Penn's Hazardous Materials response team.

Job Description

Responsibilities:
  • Develops and implements programs designed to ensure compliance with federal, state and local laws.
  • Conducts campus inspections and laboratory audits.
  • Assesses, evaluates, and identifies controls for health hazards.
  • Provides industrial hygiene monitoring.
  • Conducts job hazard assessments.
  • Investigates accidents, injuries and complaints concerning hazards and exposures in the workplace.
  • Recommends improvements in processes, design, procedures, and operating equipment to minimize hazards.
  • Part of emergency response team to evaluate biological, chemical and physical hazard incidents and to determine the appropriate level of response.
  • Develops and conducts training on health and safety related topics.
  • Evaluates ergonomic stressors for job tasks and provides recommendations to reduce risk of injury.
  • Evaluates indoor air quality concerns.


Qualifications:

BS in biology, chemistry, environmental science or engineering. MS, CIH or CSP preferred. Five to seven years of experience in environmental health and safety or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Computer skills including word processing, spreadsheet and database applications. Valid driver's license. Ability to move freely and lift and move objects up to 50 pounds. Ability to wear personal protective equipment, including respirator.
