Summary of Position

The Department of Agriculture, Nutrition, and Food Systems of the University of New Hampshire (UNH) invites applications for a benefits-eligible, non-tenure-track Lecturer position to begin August 22, 2022. 

The principal role of this position is to teach required courses in the Veterinary Technology program and to be responsible for the business activities of the PAWS Veterinary Teaching Clinic including maintaining inventory and equipment, managing clinic software, records, and schedules; and implementing safety and security procedures.

 Duties and responsibilities

  • 5 units: Teach undergraduate students in coursework.
  • 2 units: Responsible for clinic inventory control, equipment maintenance, policy maintenance and enforcement, patient and student scheduling, and oversight of record-keeping and invoicing.
  • 1 unit: the service roles include University or outside committee membership, undergraduate student advising, and other activities in support of the Veterinary Technology program.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Teach 5 units of veterinary technology coursework per year to include at least two sections of VTEC 579 or 580, Small Animal Practicum I & II respectively
  • Manage veterinary clinic activities
  • Maintain inventory of clinic equipment and supplies
  • Procure clinic supplies as needed
  • Maintain and audit digital medical records and logs
  • Appointment management
  • Calibrate, troubleshoot, and perform basic maintenance on clinic equipment (centrifuges, electric clippers, ophthalmoscope, x-ray PPE, ultrasound machine, etc.)
  • Coordinate the regular maintenance (repair, certification, support) and training of specialized equipment (valued at over $200,000): anesthesia machines, oxygen generator, surgical light and table, dental station, digital dental and full-body radiograph machines, ultrasonic scaler, autoclave, CBC and blood chemistry analyzers
  • Coordinate the proper disposal of biohazardous materials
  • Maintain current SDS documents and controlled drug logs
  • Comply with state, federal, university and AVMA regulations regarding safe and ethical laboratory and veterinary clinic operation
  • Liaison with UNH Animal Resource Office, Radiation Safety Officer, and Environmental Health & Safety Department for clinic safety and procedures review
  • Work closely with faculty, department administrative staff, clients, community partners, students, and teaching assistants to maintain clinic operations. 
  • Promote the clinic to stakeholders such as local veterinarians, housing authorities, and town public assistance programs, and act as an advocate for the clinic’s patients, clients, and students
  • Collaborate with faculty to design, develop, construct, and/or adapt clinic activities for incorporation into the curriculum.
  • Coordinate student, client, and surgeon schedules
  • May work as surgical nurse and anesthetist with surgeon and students, providing demonstrations and oversight to students
  • Work with surgeon and faculty to establish and maintain appropriate clinical protocols
  • Maintain student records to ensure compliance with AVMA accreditation standards. This will include tracking essential skills for 20-30 undergraduate students each year

Acceptable Minimum Qualifications                                   

  • Bachelor’s
  • 5 years’ experience as a credentialed technician

Additional Preferred Qualifications                                     

  • Credentialed veterinary technician (willing to become certified in the state of NH within 6 months)
  • 3 years’ experience in a supervisory or leadership role
  • Ability to perform all common small animal veterinary technician tasks in patient handling and assessment, radiography, surgical assisting, anesthesia, dentistry, pharmacology, and medication administration 
  • Capability to diagnose and perform basic repairs on various veterinary equipment
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and administration skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting ability
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment as challenges arise
  • Ability to remain patient and calm during stressful events
  • Comfortable working with technology
