Department Chair of Family Medicine, Associate Professor or Professor

Reporting to the Dean of the Boonshoft School of Medicine, the Chair, Department of Family Medicine, is responsible for building and leading an outstanding department of Family Medicine, encompassing all departmental missions, including a robust clinical practice, high quality graduate and undergraduate medical education programs, excellence in research and scholarship, and service. This leader is expected to divide their time between administrative leadership, teaching at the UME and GME levels, research, and active practice, as well as establish a strong vision for the department which is in concert with and supportive of the mission of BSOM and WSU. 

Required Qualifications

  • MD or DO with board certification in Family Medicine.
  • Completion of a residency program in Family Medicine.
  • Qualified for appointment at the rank of associate professor or full professor at an LCME accredited medical school.
  • Eligible for medical license in the state of Ohio.
  • Ten years of progressive leadership experience in a department of Family Medicine at an academic medical center with a record of professional accomplishments on a national and international scale, with a strong focus on academic and clinical success.
  • A commitment to and demonstrated results in the advancement of diversity and inclusion in current organization.

Associate Professor level candidates must fulfill all the requirements above, along with at least 5 years’ experience as an Assistant Professor with an exemplary scholarly portfolio and supervisory experience. 

Full Professor candidates must fulfill all the requirements of Associate Professor along with at least 5 years’ experience at the Associate Professor level with an exemplary scholarly portfolio and leadership experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Significant leadership experience and demonstrated success as a manager at the Chair, Associate Director, Director or program leader level within an academic medical center, including successful experience in the recruitment, retention, and management of clinicians and researchers.
  • Significant experience in dealing effectively with community partners and training sites, including maintaining excellent relationships with community preceptors
  • A distinguished academic record and national presence in the discipline as evidenced by such activity as peer-reviewed publications, involvement/leadership in one’s major national organization, or equivalent experience.
  • Dynamic leadership, communication and interpersonal skills. 
  • Ability to foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and accountability.
  • Strong organizational, management, financial, and budgetary skills with the ability to bring scientific leadership and organizational innovation to the management of people and processes.
  • A demonstrated ability to think strategically with a vision of how to develop medical education, clinical services, and research for the future while keeping an eye on the details of the implementation; has the ability to articulate a vision that will promote and integrate medical education, research, and patient care across the community.
  • A proven background in recruitment, mentoring, and development of outstanding academic and administrative leadership. A dedicated leader and mentor to faculty and staff.
  • An outstanding record of scientific achievement, grant support, scholarly accomplishments and mentoring.
  • A proven ability to build strong teams, as well as to work as a team member with one’s colleagues in management and in team leadership positions with one’s direct reports.
  • An ability to grow revenue and attract external funding from institutions and individuals; specific experience with donor fundraising a plus.
  • A demonstrated record of building strong teams, both within and across disciplines. Evidence of support for interdisciplinary research and clinical program development is highly valued.
  • Experience or ability to nurture and grow a successful residency program.
  • Experience or ability to support and integrate Global Health education and training into the UME and GME core curricula
