Assistant Vice Chancellor - Student Diversity, Engagement, and Success (SDES)

The Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Diversity, Engagement, and Success serves as a campus leader with primary responsibility for programs that enhance, engage, and support students for success in their academic programs. This position will have responsibility for programs that provide enhanced support for students of diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. This office will as serve as the home for coordination of the University’s High-Impact Practices (HIPs). All of the programs in this office are intended to foster improved student engagement, graduation, and success.

The position is designed to create synergies between and among these programs in ways that will maximize and expand opportunities for students to reach their fullest potential. The AVC-SDES will also be responsible for creating collaborative relationships with the Chief Diversity Officer and programs in Enrollment & Retention, First Year Experience, Academic Advising and Exploration Center, the Center for Global Education, and Continuing Education. The AVC-SDES will establish relationships and coordination mechanisms with leaders in Student Affairs to promote intergroup relations and to support the coordination, implementation and assessment of SDES programs and HIPs across campus. The AVC-SDES will work with faculty and staff in the Race and Ethnic Studies program, Women and Gender Studies Department and other academic programs that focus on diversity to create connections between these programs in those in the SDES office to enhance student success. Programs in SDES are also enhanced by student participation in a variety of student organizations.  Connections between these organizations and SDES programs should be a focus of the position.

The AVC-SDES will play a leadership role in efforts to evaluate the effectiveness of HIPs across the campus according to the university’s new strategic plan goals and objectives. The AVC-SDES will ensure that SDES programs are contributing to meeting campus strategic goals for improving access and student success, transforming lives and society and promoting diversity and inclusion. The AVC-SDES will also be responsible for developing new programs in support of these goals.

The following units report to the AVC-SDES:

  • PreCollege Programs, including Upward Bound
  • SDES Retention Programs
  • King/Chavez Scholars Program
  • McNair Scholars Program
  • Honors Program
  • Undergraduate Research
  • Community Based Learning

In addition to the units listed above, this office will provide campus-wide coordination of internships and oversight for the campus Student Employment Initiative in partnership with other campus offices as additional High-Impact Practices.

The AVC-SDES reports to the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.

Specific responsibilities include:

Student Diversity, Engagement and Success

  • Develop, maintain and evaluate a strategic plan for Student Diversity, Engagement and Success.
  • Coordinate, support and promote programs in assigned portfolio to ensure that they are meeting program goals and university strategic priorities.
  • Evaluate current program effectiveness and recommend improvements.
  • Work collaboratively with leaders in other divisions to promote cross campus collaborations.
  • Serve on committees and councils related to enrollment, retention, graduation, and diversity and inclusion.
  • Build relationships with faculty and staff across campus in order to enhance student learning and success, integrate SDES programs and HIPs, and build a positive campus climate.
  • Facilitate intergroup relations between Academic and Student Affairs units relative to SDES programs and support.
  • Secure grants, contract and other external funding in support of program activities and initiatives.
  • Serve on campus committees related to diversity, student success and other areas related to SDES programs.
  • Coordinate UW-W participation in WisCAMP, the National Science Foundation-funded Wisconsin Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation in STEM program.
  • Oversight for events and other programs organized/sponsored by SDES, including the Multicultural Heritage Lecture Series and MLK Commemoration; cooperation with other units hosting related campus events.
  • Form cross divisional advisory group of faculty, staff and students to guide program direction and implementation in SDES.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Provost/Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.

    Administrative

  • Oversee SDES strategic planning, driven by research analysis, data management, and student input.
  • Hire, manage, and supervise personnel; conduct performance evaluations of employees.
  • Establish and maintain professional development plans for staff.
  • Make staffing assignments as appropriate from the operations of the offices and programs within the unit.
  • Monitor the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of the federal programs
  • Improve success of existing programs and seek opportunities for new federal/state funding.
  • Prepare and monitor program budgets and progress regarding grant-funded projects.
  • Participate as a member of the Academic Affairs Staff leadership team.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Five years of higher education leadership experience that includes personnel management, budget planning, outcomes assessments, events/programming, and strategic planning.
  • At least seven years of working in the field of multicultural/diversity education and/or High-Impact Practices (HIPs) and/or other student success initiatives.
  • Experience working with a variety of campus units and programs, and cross unit coordination especially with faculty, department chairs, deans, various academic programs as well as programs within student affairs.
  • A clear vision and understanding of the trends, opportunities and challenges in higher education, especially as they relate to diverse student populations.
  • Experience working on campus climate issues, including equity, diversity, and inclusivity within a higher education environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to secure external funding to support program goals.
  • Outstanding oral communication and writing skills, in particular with respect to grant writing and program reporting.
  • Evidence of responsible fiscal management, budget allocation processes, stewardship of resources, and reporting.
  • Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Higher Education, Race, Ethnic or Gender Studies or a related field at the time of hire OR  Master's degree in Higher Education, Race, Ethnic or Gender Studies or a related field with significant related experience. 

    HIGHLY DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in program evaluation and data analytics.
  • Previous successful experience in federal grant-writing.
  • Demonstrated experience in working across boundaries, both cultural and organizational, to accomplish the requirements of this role.
  • Evidence of establishing positive, healthy working relationships with underrepresented students and experience working with diverse populations. 
  • Ability to promote a collegial, positive and productive work environment.

    Desired start date: August 1, 2017

    Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. Final offer of employment is contingent upon a successful background check.
