Job Profile Title
Research Investigator, Senior

Job Description Summary
The Senior Research Investigator will be involved in planning and conducting in vivo electrophysiology recordings to assess neuronal circuitry, perform sample collections, assist with immunohistochemistry studies, and measure protein and gene expression. The Research Specialist will independently design and perform assigned experiments, develop standard protocols, process and analyze results, including analyses of archived data, while adhering to standard procedures and guidelines.

Job Description

A full time Senior Research Investigator position to collaboratively study i) mechanisms of epileptogenesis and seizure-evoked changes in behavior; and ii) mechanisms of neuroinflammation-associated neurodegeneration is open in the laboratories of Drs. Delia Talos and Dennis Kolson at the University of Pennsylvania. The Talos lab collaborates closely with the laboratory of Dr. Kolson in the Department of Neurology, and this position bridges studies within and between each laboratory. The Talos lab uses a broad range of techniques including immunohistochemistry, protein biochemistry, in vivo electrophysiology and behavioral testing to understand how epilepsy develops, and how seizures can subsequently alter neuronal circuitry and behavior. A particular focus of the lab is unraveling how brain inflammation contribute to the development of epileptic seizures and causes changes in neuronal activity that ultimately impact learning. The Kolson laboratory, located adjacent to the Talos lab in the Clinical Research Building, uses techniques of western blotting, RNA/DNA analyses, immunohistochemistry, and biochemical assays to study neurodegeneration pathways associated with oxidative stress and neuroinflammation. A related goal is the development of targeted therapies to prevent neurodegeneration (Kolson lab) and prevention of epilepsy (Talos lab) and their impact on behavioral outcomes in patients at risk. The Neurology department, along with the greater Neuroscience community at the University of Pennsylvania, provides an outstanding, collegial environment for scientific development. In addition, close ties with clinical programs in Neurology and Neurosurgery offers the potential for collaborative translational studies.
