Senior Career Counselor

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: 

Serves as the senior career counselor in a centralized center to provide students with a range of career counseling including career assessments, career research, career planning, and graduate school exploration.

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES: 

Provides one-on-one career counseling to students by assisting them to engage in the career development process and understand how the process is related to career choice and work performance by identifying, assessing, and understanding their competencies, interests, values, and personal characteristics. Provides comprehensive career services to assist students in the life-long process of career assessment, decision-making, planning, and continuous development. Works collaboratively with Career Development Services (CDS) staff to develop, present, and assess annual CDS workshops. Collaborates with faculty in order to build sustainable cross-divisional partnerships with CDS. Provides support and information to faculty on potentially sensitive or controversial issues surrounding state and federal labor regulations. Implements and evaluates a strategic plan to build and sustain faculty partnerships in an effort to increase student engagement with internships and post-graduation employment opportunities. Participates in the coordination of outreach activities, regular program evaluations, and assists with the administration, analysis, and interpretation of vocational tests and assessments. Assists students with preparing resumes, developing interviewing skills, and searching for jobs through hardcopy and electronic sources. Develops and presents various workshops and seminars on current career and employment related topics including resume writing, job search, interviewing, major-specific career exploration, and major-specific job and internship search. Coordinates the hiring, training, and evaluation process for CDS student assistants as well as provides day-to-day oversight. Manages and maintains career resource library and materials, including information technology equipment, software, videos, publications, and other career resources. Collects online materials and hands-on resources including labor market information, employer information, directories, resource guides, career path options, corporate annual reports, policies, products, and services. Assists with the development and implementation of policies and procedures consistent with the mission of the University. Writes and maintains specific sections of the CDS website and contributes to publications. Maintains accurate program data and produces statistical reports on graduate job acquisition, salaries, recruitment activities, and other job development related information. Provides appropriate responses to office inquiries and/or complaints which require full knowledge of the University infrastructure, policies, and procedures to make a mature judgment and communicate effectively. Collaborates with CDS staff to facilitate and evaluate employer recruitment events. Assists with special events/projects as assigned. Participates in chamber related events to generate employer interest in recruitment of CI students and alumni. Develops innovative strategies with the use of technology to better serve constituent needs. Performs additional related duties as assigned.

SUPERVISOR/OTHER WORK RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports directly to the Director of Student Leadership and Career Development Services. Works closely with Career Development Services team members and works collaboratively with Campus Life and Division of Student Affairs personnel. Works collaboratively with faculty and administrators within the University as well as community members.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: 

Bachelor’s degree in higher education, counseling, career development, or related field required; Master’s degree preferred. At least three years of progressively responsible experience working in a career center with minimal to no supervision. Symplicity software experience strongly preferred. Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and Strong Interest Inventory certifications preferred. Thorough knowledge of the principles and techniques of career development theories. Ability to choose, conduct and interpret formal and informal career assessment tools and other interactive strategies to assist students in clarifying values, personality traits, interests, and skills. Experience in selection and use of appropriate counseling interventions and responses to promote and teach decision-making and goal setting skills. A team player and self-starter. Ability to work in a complex, invigorating, and dynamic community. Demonstrated ability to effectively initiate, plan and organize recruitment events including job fairs and to appropriately address issues and requests that arise at recruitment events. Demonstrated skill in establishing effective working relationships with staff, faculty, and employers. Knowledge and ability to use analytical, problem solving, and organizational skills with the ability to work creatively and independently. Initiative, creativity, and resourcefulness in anticipating and addressing student needs. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation. Knowledge and ability to design, measure, and summarize student learning outcomes, satisfaction surveys, and first-destination data. Knowledge and experience working successfully and providing leadership within culturally diverse and historically underserved communities. Proven ability to develop, facilitate, and assess trainings and workshops (e.g., career planning, graduate school preparation). Ability to independently create, prioritize and implement a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions Utilize all forms of office technology and frequently used software (e.g. MS Word, Powerpoint, Outlook and Excel, Adobe Photoshop and Mac applications). Must be organized and follow directions with minimal to moderate supervision and handle multiple tasks with constant interruptions. Must be able to interpret and apply policies and procedures independently and use judgment and discretion to act when precedents do not exist. Must maintain the confidentiality of student information at all times (as per FERPA). Must be able to communicate effectively with a diverse population of students, faculty, staff and community, and be able to effectively interact as a member of the Division of Student Affairs.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU.
