The George Mason University Honors College (HC), under the Office of the Provost, invites applications for the next Associate Dean. In collaboration with all units of the university serving undergraduates, HC leads Mason’s efforts to recruit, challenge and support the most highly motivated students in every field of study. Participation in the HC prepares students to excel in their major fields of study as well as in collaboration with those from different disciplinary, sociocultural and economic backgrounds. HC alumni succeed in graduate and professional studies in every field and in jobs demanding excellence in research, leadership and creativity.
The Associate Dean is responsible for working with HC staff and faculty to continue developing the quality and reputation of all services and programs under its auspices. The Associate Dean also has primary responsibility for all science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and health (STEM-H) programs (i.e., programs especially for students in the College of Science, the Volgenau School of Engineering and the College of Health and Human Services). Duties include:
- Assisting the Dean in the supervision of the office staff;
- Assisting with data collection and analysis (assessment), and grant and report writing;
- Representing HC on university committees as approved or assigned by the Dean;
- Representing HC in the business community for the purpose of advancement;
- Teaching one class per semester;
- Collaborating and coordinating with STEM-H partners to support the success of HC students in the STEM-H fields;
- In coordination with faculty, identifying especially promising STEM-H students for research, internship and fellowship opportunities;
- Increasing research, internship and fellowship opportunities for STEM-H students;
- In coordination with STEM-H faculty and department advisors, advising HC students in the STEM-H fields;
- In coordination with Admissions and faculty, recruiting prospective students in the STEM-H fields (including at Orientation and other recruitment events);
- Informing university efforts to transform Mason into Virginia’s primary destination for first-generation and other under-represented groups seeking STEM-H degrees;
- Informing university efforts to graduate cohorts in which there are no access-related distinctions between groups in STEM-H participation, rates of graduation, retention, or employment/grad school acceptance;
- Maintaining the relevance and effectiveness of the HC STEM-H curriculum in meeting the goals and needs of students in the STEM-H fields;
- In coordination with departments, maintaining the quality of instruction for HC STEM-H coursework; and
- Working with the deans of the College of Science, the Volgenau School of Engineering and the College of Health and Human Services and with chairs in STEM-H departments to schedule and staff HC classes in the STEM-H fields.
- Ph.D. in relevant field;
- Teaching experience;
- Advising experience;
- Research experience;
Demonstrated commitment to recruiting and fostering the success of a diverse student body; and
Ability to relate to and communicate with instructional, research and administrative faculty, and students from across the institution.
Ability to communicate with business partners outside the university; and Administrative experience.
