Coordinate the screening of patients, subject enrollment, collection and storage of biological samples and related study documents, and collection of clinical data. Assist with Institutional Review Board (IRB) filings and inquiries, and assist in the preparation of manuscripts, grant proposals, and research related presentations. Works closely with the Principal Investigator, manager, and study team to identify problems and develop solutions. Implement approved changes to procedures as needed and monitor results. Responsible for study coordination for investigator-initiated studies, multi-center research studies, and patient-oriented clinical and translational research projects.

Job Description

The Palliative and Advanced Illness Research Center is seeking a full-time clinical research coordinator who will be responsible for supporting multiple components of a mixed-methods study that aims to design a novel outcome measure for future trials of patients with Alzheimer's Disease and related dementias. Recognizing that traditional outcomes used in studies fail to capture aspects of the patient and family caregiver experience that matter most, we will seek perspectives of patients with dementia, their family caregivers, and dementia clinicians to design a new survival-residence composite outcome measure. This project aims to empower patients and their families and bring their voices into the design and execution of dementia outcomes research.

Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, the CRC's primary responsibilities will include developing and implementing procedures for screening, recruiting, and consenting participants, including patients with dementia; collecting data from the electronic health record; administering surveys; conducting interviews with patients and caregivers; and supporting qualitative data analysis, including collaborative coding and analysis of interviews. The CRC will also be responsible for various day-to-day study operations including maintaining study databases, compliance with all IRB and regulatory documentation, and assisting with the preparation of materials to disseminate study results as needed.

Experienced candidates will have the opportunity to work closely with and provide supervision of students based on experience and interest. The CRC should be able to work closely with external partners, such as other health systems and community organizations.

RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES

Screen patients' electronic health records for study eligibility - this includes utilizing ICD-9/10 codes as well as verifying diagnoses with clinicians' typed notes and diagnostic testing results. Independently recruit patients and caregivers from clinical sites and arrange in-person and/or telephone interviews and surveys to collect study data. This includes interfacing with clinical and administrative staff as well as patients and caregivers in a clinical setting. Working with this diverse group of individuals, including patients with advanced dementia, will require excellent interpersonal and communication skills as well as good judgment.

Conduct interviews and surveys. Analyze the resulting transcripts including collaborative development of codebooks, coding, participating in iterative coding meetings with the study PI(s) and other team members, and analyze themes and content for research purposes.

Maintain study databases; create and maintain online surveys.

Independently modify IRB applications, perform study modifications, and continuing reviews

Act in leadership capacity to support training and ongoing performance of student workers and provide feedback on performance to PI.

Participate in meetings with investigators and other research staff including weekly Center staff meetings, work-in-progress meetings, and monthly Center-wide meetings.

QUALIFICATIONS/Duties:

CRC A:
  • Lead all screening, recruitment, and consent protocols for research studies
  • Conduct interviews with patients, family caregivers, and clinicians
  • Administer surveys to patients and their family members
  • Perform qualitative data analysis on office visit and interview transcripts using NVivo software
  • Maintain study databases and data tracking systems using REDCap
  • Attend research team meetings
  • Maintain regulatory compliance and IRB documentation
  • Bachelor's and 1-2 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required


CRC B:
  • Perform all duties as listed above
  • Manage and oversee the work of students and research assistants
  • Maintain relationships and collaborate with community organizations
  • Bachelor's and 2-3 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required


Strong computer skills are essential. Candidate must be comfortable working with seriously ill patients and handling sensitive health information. Candidate must be detail-oriented with excellent communication and interpersonal skills; highly organized; attentive to detail; ability to multi-task; and flexibility to shift focus between projects as needed. Experience in health care is preferred, but not required. Position contingent upon funding.
