Syracuse University invites inquiries, nominations and applications for Vice President for Research. Reporting to the Provost and serving as a vital member of the university’s senior team, the Vice President for Research will provide vision, innovation and bold leadership to build on the successes of distinguished faculty, research and discovery across this Carnegie R1 research university. The new Vice President will partner with senior leadership and faculty to create and realize an ambitious new vision for the research enterprise to move the institution to another level and to be proactive in addressing the challenging national and global research environment.
Founded in 1870, Syracuse University is a private, co-educational research institution with a proud tradition of providing an environment in which students from diverse backgrounds come together. Over 21,000 students are enrolled in nationally-ranked undergraduate, graduate and professional programs in the university’s 13 schools and colleges. The university has approximately 1,700 full- and part-time tenured or tenure-track and non-tenure track faculty.

Their groundbreaking research ranges from detecting gravitational waves emanating from deep space, developing smart biomaterials for curing challenging diseases, and mitigating threats via cybersecurity to enhancing the impact of interdisciplinary humanities, curating an exhibition of Michelangelo’s drawings and simulating environmental effects for architectural spaces.
Candidates should hold a terminal degree in their respective fields and demonstrate a strong track record in scholarly publications, entrepreneurial spirit and expertise, strategic planning, program building and success in obtaining external research support. The ideal candidate will possess deep knowledge about diverse funding sources and display innovative solutions to support research endeavors across disciplines and approaches; strong administrative leadership skills to bolster key infrastructure and enhance research capacity; exceptional ability to advance an organization’s research mission; and evidence of fostering internal and external collaborative partnerships.
