Assistant Professor – Loretta Rogers Chair in Immunobioengineering (1700039)
The Institute of Biomaterials & Biomedical Engineering (http://www.ibbme.utoronto.ca) in the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure-stream appointment in the research areas of immunobioengineering and immunology related to stem cell biology, regenerative medicine, heart disease, and cell and organ transplantation. Novel approaches to engineer immune responses for regenerative medicine applications are of particular interest. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor. The expected start date is July 1, 2017.
Candidates are expected to demonstrate capacity for outstanding research, excellence in teaching and experience teaching undergraduate courses in any of the fields noted above. Candidates will be closely associated with Ted Rogers Centre for Heart Research (TRCHR) (see below) and / or the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) Medicine by Design Program, and considered for appointment in appropriate partner departments at UofT, which may include Immunology, Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology, Cell and Systems Biology, and others within the Faculties of Applied Science and Engineering, Medicine, Arts and Science, and the Toronto Academic Health Sciences Network. Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree in a relevant area by the time of appointment or shortly thereafter.
The ideal candidate will have an emerging reputation with internationally recognized scholarship and a demonstrated excellence in research and teaching. Excellence in research will be demonstrated by the quality of articles submitted in the application; output of research or a research pipeline that is at high international levels; publications in top ranked and field relevant academic journals, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and strong endorsements by referees of the highest international stature. The successful candidate will be expected to initiate and lead an innovative, independent research program of the highest international calibre. Evidence for excellence in teaching will be provided through positive teaching accomplishments and accolades, strong letters of reference, and a reflective teaching statement. Eligibility to register as a Professional Engineer in Ontario is strongly desirable.
The Ted Rogers Centre for Heart Research (www.TedRogersResearch.ca) is a unique research institute focused on heart failure across the lifespan that was enabled by a magnificent gift of $129.5 million from The Rogers Foundation, and matching contributions from the three founding partners, Hospital for Sick Children, University Health Network, and UofT.
Outstanding candidates with demonstrated excellence in immunobioengineering and/or immunology research relevant to heart failure will be considered for the Loretta Rogers Chair in Immunobioengineering within the TRCHR Translational Biology and Engineering Program. Particular research areas of interest are immune modulation or tolerance induction strategies for cardiac regeneration, including immune-modifying biomaterials and human pluripotent stem cells and immune modulation in cardiac cell and tissue transplantation, but all research interests aimed at solving unaddressed immunology-related problems in heart disease and regenerative cardiac therapy will be considered.
A track record of collaborative science, program building, productivity, excellence and a demonstrated capacity for leadership is essential. Through research and scholarly activities, the Chair holder will position the TRCHR as a global leader in knowledge and technology generation and translation in the area of immunobioengineering related to heart disease. The Chair is one of eight being created in TRCHR, and is enabled by a fund of $4.8M consisting of a $3M endowment and $1.8M expendable funds. The term of the Chair is five years, with opportunity for renewal.
