The College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning
The College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP) at the University of Cincinnati invites applications for the position of Director of the School of Art at the rank of Professor or Associate Professor level.

The School of Art is housed within the renowned College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning widely known for a unique learning experience where experiential learning, cooperative education, and exhilaration for dynamic practice and research ensure that academic study will have a transformative effect in the lives of our students. The School champions equity and inclusion and the role of the visual arts in the greater community. Our internationally recognized faculty teach institutionally overlooked and repressed histories and challenge our students to deepen their understanding of diverse viewpoints and perspectives. Students have access to the state-of-the-art maker and lab facilities, multiple on-campus galleries, and the resources of a world-class research university. Visiting artists and scholars augment our fine art, art history, and art education students’ understanding of multi-faceted histories, practices, and philosophies of the visual arts. Job Overview
The School of Art, in the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning, welcomes a colleague whose critical studies and creative practices can realize the University’s NEXT Lives Here mission of social transformation through a commitment to our diverse students’ futures. The School Director is appointed for a 5-year (renewable) term as the administrative and academic leader of the School of Art. Charged with shaping an academic culture of high achievement where creative, scholarly practices thrive, the Director supervises all interests and activities of the School and reports to the Dean of the College. Within a university model of shared governance, where various administrative and faculty bodies govern interdependently, the School Director has a personal voice in charting the School’s direction while influencing how the following responsibilities are implemented.

Essential Functions
As an academic leader, the School Director:

  • Facilitates an inclusive and collegial environment by recruiting, engaging, and fostering the growth and success of faculty, staff, and students of distinction.
  • Leads academic development in all the School's disciplines, graduate and undergraduate, and in their collaborative interactions with other disciplines across the College, the University, and the globe;
  • Leads efforts to attract and retain outstanding and diverse faculty members;
  • Leads the development and mentoring of faculty, including annual performance reviews and the provision of resources for professional growth;
  • Ensures that instruction is relevant, of high quality, and sets a high standard of professionalism;
  • Engages in teaching (at least 2 courses per academic year) in their area of expertise, which could fall within fine arts, art history, or art education;
  • Engages in research and/or creative work in their area of expertise;
  • Guides the formulation, implementation, and evaluation of the curricula and related matters;
  • Partners with the Dean and the Dean's office to develop a collegial environment.

As an administrative head, the School Director:

  • Represents and articulates the views of the School faculty, staff, and students to the Dean and others and, in turn, communicates administrative policies and decisions to the School;
  • Manages, develops, and organizes the School's administrative structure and encourages a spirit of mutual respect and diversity in the character of the School in recruiting practices for faculty, staff, and students;
  • Is responsible for day-to-day managerial matters and the operation of the School, supervises and helps to develop School staff;
  • Pursues short- and long-term objectives and academic planning;
  • Is fiscally responsible for the School budget oversight and sound judgement in managing funds;
  • Represents the views of the School and strengthens ties with the immediate community and beyond the University to both academic and professional groups and organizations;
  • Is expected to generate external funds - excellence grants, research proposals, etc. - for individual faculty and the School as a whole and work with UC Foundation through DAAP's Director of Development to build and maintain outside support of the School;
  • Serves on the Executive Committee of the College and advises the Dean on planning, policy, and affairs of the College.

Minimum Requirements
Prior to the effective date of appointment, the candidate must have the following, depending on the area of expertise:

Fine Arts

  • Master in Fine Arts or a related field
  • Five years of relevant administration experience in a higher education or professional context as evidenced by directing/managing an academic program/unit or directing/managing projects for an art-related institution or organization

Art Education

  • PhD in Art Education or a related field
  • Five years of relevant administration experience in a higher education or professional context as evidenced by directing/managing an academic program/unit or directing/managing projects for an art-related institution or organization

Art History

  • PhD in Art History or a related field
  • Five years of relevant administration experience in a higher education or professional context as evidenced by directing/managing an academic program/unit or directing/managing projects for an art-related institution or organization
