Dean of the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law

Baltimore, Maryland

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (“UMB”), one of 12 separate institutions in the University System of Maryland (“USM”), seeks a forward-thinking, strategic, creative, and collaborative leader for the position of dean of the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law (“Maryland Carey Law”). As the state’s flagship law school, and one of the oldest law schools in the country, Maryland Carey Law has a strong history of excellence in legal scholarship, education, community engagement, and social justice. The next dean will be expected to lead the School of Law to new levels of prominence and impact, and to secure the support and resources to achieve that vision.

The next dean of Maryland Carey Law will propel the School into the ranks of America’s best public law schools. The dean will be a nationally recognized scholar and an accomplished leader with the passion and drive to raise the School’s scholarly reputation, enhance its established commitment to public service and social justice, and generate the resources necessary to meet those objectives. Maryland Carey Law’s next dean will recruit and retain exceptional faculty, students, and staff; set high standards for legal scholarship, clinical practice, and teaching; and promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and community engagement.

The dean will be passionate about the mission, vision, and values of the School of Law and will be prepared to manage the cultural, strategic, and operational changes necessary to continue its success. The dean will have a record of collaborative partnership across organizational boundaries, demonstrate the learning agility that is characteristic of great leaders, and exhibit the cultural intelligence to effectively engage all those that contribute to the School’s success while focusing their efforts to benefit the School, the community, and society. The dean will seek consensus among diverse stakeholders and will be a courageous leader who can bring confidence to a broad audience. The dean will report directly to the president of UMB and will be a member of the president’s executive cabinet.

Now in its third century, the School of Law was authorized by the Maryland legislature in 1813 and began regular instruction in 1824. Today, Maryland Carey Law occupies a modern, spacious, and technologically advanced building in Baltimore, the economic and cultural center of the state. The School of Law is one of six nationally ranked professional schools (dentistry, law, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and social work), plus an interdisciplinary Graduate School, situated on the UMB campus. Located less than an hour away from Washington, D.C., and 30 minutes from Annapolis, Maryland’s capital, the School of Law is advantageously positioned in the second largest legal market in the United States.
