Chair of Neurological Surgery and The Julian R. Youmans Chair in Neurological Surgery

University of California, Davis School of Medicine seeks a successful and impactful physician-scientist-leader to serve as the next Chair of the Department of Neurological Surgery, and hold the endowed Julian R. Youmans Chair in Neurological Surgery. As the region's only Level 1 Trauma Center and the largest combined Level 1 Pediatric and Adult Trauma Center in Northern California, UC Davis Health plays a critical role in improving lives and transforming healthcare for the citizens of Sacramento and Davis, throughout the region, across the state and nation, and around the globe. The recruitment of the Chair of Neurological Surgery is essential to the continued growth and success of UC Davis Health, the School of Medicine, and the department as it works to achieve its many academic and clinical aspirations and excel in all of its important mission endeavors.

UC Davis has extraordinary strength in the life sciences and biological sciences, and is unique in having a robust health science enterprise, a highly ranked School of Veterinary Medicine and College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, a renowned College of Biological Sciences, and a College of Engineering, with many projects and goals involving several schools and/or colleges at any one time. UC Davis is also home to a number of nationally recognized neuroscience-focused centers such as the Center for Neuroscience, the Center for Mind and Brain, the UC Davis MIND Institute, the California National Primate Research Center, and the Institute for Regenerative Cures (Stem Cells). This is an environment from which ongoing and new innovative multi-discipline neuroscience programs and ventures are to be initiated by the new Chair. In particular, the new Chair will have the opportunity to knit together campus-wide initiatives that draw on the numerous areas of strength in the neurosciences that are currently present on the health science and main campus.

In order for the Department of Neurological Surgery to achieve its ambitions, the Chair will be expected to address the following opportunities and challenges:

  • Set a strategic vision for the department that continues to strengthen its clinical footprint and enhance excellence in patient care;
  • Continue to champion and support the research and education missions of the department;
  • Recruit, retain, and mentor world-class faculty;
  • Develop deep and effective relationships with the health system leadership team to ensure a robust economic foundation for the department;
  • Further capitalize on the unique resources across UC Davis; and
  • Raise the visibility and impact of the department globally.

The successful candidate will hold a medical degree and have a distinguished and balanced record in clinical, teaching, research, service, and administration. The candidate must meet requirements for appointment as Full Professor in the Ladder Rank (Regular), Clinical Investigator (Clinical X), or the Health Sciences Clinical Professor series at the University of California, have a California Medical License (or be eligible for licensure), and be board certified.
