The University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego) seeks a transformative, results-driven leader to serve as its next chief academic officer. The Executive Vice Chancellor (EVC) will play a pivotal role in stimulating and supporting the Chancellor's vision in a new era of revolutionary intellectual discovery on the campus. The campus' recent success is an early indicator of its tremendous potential, and UC San Diego is excited to be recruiting its EVC at this important time.

Since its founding in 1960, the University of California, San Diego has become one of the preeminent institutions in the United States for higher education and research. A member of the 10-campus University of California System, UC San Diego is situated on 1,200 acres of coastal woodland in La Jolla, California. The campus comprises six undergraduate colleges, five academic divisions, and five graduate and professional schools, which together enroll nearly 36,000 students (as of fall 2016); the university also operates UC San Diego Health, San Diego's only academic medical center. UC San Diego is an academic and research powerhouse, generating more than $1 billion in research funding a year and more than $4.5 billion in revenues overall. UC San Diego is the seventh and tenth best public university in the world as ranked by Times Higher Education World University Rankings and U.S. News & World Report, respectively. For the last six years, UC San Diego has consistently ranked #1 in The Washington Monthly rankings based on research productivity, social mobility, and public service. With nearly 30,000 full and part-time academic and staff employees, UC San Diego is the largest employer in San Diego County and has a very large economic foot print.

The EVC will report directly to and work closely with Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla, who became the eighth Chancellor of UC San Diego in 2012. In collaboration with the students, faculty, staff, local, alumni, and corporate communities, Chancellor Khosla has forged a bold strategic plan -- along with an aggressive philanthropic effort and substantial infrastructure expansion -- to focus the university's efforts in fulfilling its mission of excellence in education, research, and public service. Through active engagement with faculty, staff, and students, the EVC will play a central role in accomplishing this vision. The EVC will guide the campus to enhance, expand, and create academic and research programs to address globally significant 21st-century challenges. The Office of Academic Affairs, led by the EVC, oversees academic planning and programming, academic policy, and the academic personnel process. The EVC manages General Campus academic units, which comprise five undergraduate and graduate divisions, and two professional schools. The Vice Chancellor for Marine Sciences, who oversees academic and research programs of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and the Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences, who oversees the academic and research programs of the School of Medicine and UC San Diego hospitals and clinics, along with the EVC, report directly to the Chancellor.
