President

The Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM), based in Chicago, seeks a creative, entrepreneurial, collaborative leader for the position of President. The member colleges launched ACM in 1958, building on a long-established tradition of athletic competition dating back to the 1920s. The 10 founding members of ACM (Beloit, Lawrence, and Ripon in Wisconsin; Coe, Cornell, and Grinnell in Iowa; Carleton and St. Olaf in Minnesota; Knox and Monmouth in Illinois) are still actively engaged with the consortium, and were strengthened by new members Macalester and Colorado Colleges in 1967, Lake Forest College in 1974, and Luther College in 2009. ACM aims to strengthen its member colleges as leaders and exemplars in liberal arts education through significant, innovative, and sustainable collaborations.

Working closely with the Board of Directors, the Advisory Board of Deans, and other campus leaders, the President will shape the next set of strategic priorities for the consortium. As a leader who engages across the 14 member institutions, the President must be innovative and versatile, with the ability to identify and build consensus around initiatives that add value to the collective consortial community. S/he/ze should have a deep and unwavering commitment to the liberal arts model, as well as a clear understanding of the current and potential challenges for private, residential liberal arts colleges. The President will be expected to build upon the momentum of ongoing initiatives, as well as generate novel ideas with particular focus on attracting the resources necessary for implementation.

The ACM presidency offers an opportunity to work with 14 exceptional learning communities as they engage in collaboration across the spectrum of teaching, research, and service. S/he/ze will have five direct reports, oversight of 11 additional consortial staff members along with staff at ACM’s off-campus program sites, and will manage an operating budget of $5 million, as well as a $10 million endowment.
