Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities

The University of Maryland seeks a collaborative leader, accomplished scholar and persuasive advocate for the arts and humanities to serve as the next Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities (ARHU).

Founded in 1856, University of Maryland, College Park is the state’s flagship institution. The 1,250-acre College Park campus is just minutes away from Washington, D.C., the nexus of the nation’s legislative, executive and judicial centers of power. This unique proximity to business and technology leaders; federal departments and agencies; and a myriad of research entities, embassies, think tanks, cultural centers and non-profit organizations is simply unparalleled. Synergistic opportunities for faculty and students are ubiquitous in the nation’s capital and surrounding areas. It is also close to Baltimore, a major center for commerce and higher education in Maryland. Faculty and students in the College of Arts and Humanities explore the human experience across an exceptionally broad range of subjects. With 31 academic majors and 37 minors over 11 departments, three schools and 21 research centers, ARHU provides the opportunity to study the cultures of the world, past and present, in all their rich variety. Through teaching and research that investigates human experience, thought, expression and creativity, the college aims to produce creative problem solvers and global visionaries exceptionally prepared for a wide range of careers, who are ready to serve their communities and the larger society. ARHU is currently home to 3,136 undergraduate and graduate students with 40.5% students of color (30% underrepresented minority), 319 tenured/tenure-track faculty, 292 instructors and lecturers and 216 staff, and in fall 2021, offered over 87,500 credit hours.

Diversity is embedded into every element of the College of Arts and Humanities, with the intention to better prepare students for an increasingly diverse, multicultural and international society. Diverse Issues in Higher Education rated ARHU No. 1 in the country for graduating African American students with doctoral degrees in area, ethnic, cultural gender and group studies as well as in foreign languages, literatures and linguistics and No. 2 for graduating African American students with doctoral degrees in visual and performing arts. During his April 2021 Inauguration Ceremony, President Darryll Pines announced Arts for All, an initiative that will expand arts programming across the University and create new opportunities for students and faculty to fuse the arts, technology, innovation and social justice.

Reporting directly to Senior Vice President and Provost Jennifer King Rice, Maryland's next dean will be committed to strong and visionary leadership for the college, eager to support its array of exceptional departments, schools, research centers, disciplines and academic cultures. The dean will work with faculty, staff and students to articulate a vision for the contributions ARHU will make to the fulfillment of Maryland's mission and new strategic plan. The dean will be committed to building a community whose members advance diversity and inclusive excellence in teaching and learning. The new dean will promote a culture of impactful research, scholarship and creative activities; encourage interdisciplinary collaboration and partnerships; and advocate persuasively for ARHU's programs both within and beyond the campus community. The dean will manage resources thoughtfully and work with campus partners, alumni, donors and foundations to increase philanthropic support for the college's faculty, programs and students. As the leader of the college, the new dean will have the opportunity to serve on the university’s academic leadership team, collaborate on university-wide initiatives and engage with diverse stakeholder groups to build support for the arts and humanities. 

Candidates must have an appropriate earned degree for their field by the time of application in a discipline within the arts or humanities and a record of scholarship or creative achievement that merits a tenured appointment at Maryland with the rank of full professor. The dean will have experience as an academic leader, for example, as a department chair, institute director or academic administrator and will have participated in the processes of faculty appointment and promotion. The dean will have a record of advancing institutional equity, diversity and inclusion. The dean will also have a record of promoting student welfare by listening to and addressing their needs and concerns. The dean will have experience with alumni and donor relations or have clear potential for strength in those areas. The successful candidate will understand the distinctive character and mission of a public university and will have a record of fruitful, collaborative efforts to build consensus.
