The Department of Molecular Genetics, in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto (St. George campus), invites applications for a full-time, tenure stream faculty position in the area of computational biology, as applied to microbiology, parasitology and/or virology in the context of infectious disease. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor with an anticipated start date of September 1, 2022.
We seek candidates whose research program and interests complement and enhance our departmental strengths, which encompass computational biology, functional genomics, microbiology, and virology. Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Computational Biology, Microbiology, Virology, or a related discipline at the time of appointment, with a clearly demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue an innovative, competitive and independently funded research program at the highest international level. The candidate will be invited to become a key member of the Emerging and Pandemic Infection Consortium (EPIC; epic.utoronto.ca), a program that marshals the advanced research infrastructure and the world-renowned research and training expertise of the U of T and its affiliated hospital network to allow an integrated innovative response to infectious diseases. Candidates must provide strong evidence of research excellence of an internationally competitive caliber, as evidenced by a record of publications in leading journals in the field as well as presentations at significant conferences, the submitted research statement, accolades or awards, and strong endorsements by referees of high standing.
The successful candidate will also undertake undergraduate and graduate teaching responsibilities on the University’s St. George campus. The candidate will participate in the Computational Biology in Molecular Genetics (CBMG) Ph.D. track, offered through the Department of Molecular Genetics. To this end candidates should provide a statement of teaching philosophy and interests that also highlight personal contributions to foster diversity and inclusion. Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier (with required materials outlined below) submitted as part of the application, evidence of superior performance in teaching-related activities, as well as strong letters of reference. Teaching-related activities can include performance as a teaching assistant or course instructor, experience leading successful workshops or seminars, student mentorship, or excellent conference presentations or posters.
The successful candidate will be appointed as a faculty member in the Department of Molecular Genetics in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, and a cross-appointment will be sought in the Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
