Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management

Western Michigan University (WMU), a learner-centered, discovery-driven and globally-engaged research university, invites inquiries, nominations and expressions of interest for the position of associate vice president for enrollment management (AVPEM).

Founded as a Normal School in 1903, WMU's main campus is based in Kalamazoo, Michigan, on the lands historically occupied by the Ojibwe, Odawa and Bodewadmi nations. The University has regional locations in Grand Rapids, Battle Creek and Metro Detroit. WMU's total enrollment of over 19,000 students makes it Michigan’s fifth largest higher education institution, attracting a diverse and culturally rich student body from across the United States and almost 100 other countries. Washington Monthly ranks WMU as the #1 best public university in Michigan for moving up in the world.

Western Michigan University is an institution on the move. Earlier this year, the WMU Foundation received a historic gift of a half-billion dollars, the largest ever for a public higher education institution. Known as the Empowering Futures Gift, the funds will support scholarships, advance medical education and research, support faculty expertise, increase athletic competitiveness and make possible numerous student-centered initiatives. The University's physical space is also being transformed. WMU has added a new building for the College of Aviation (ranked third in the country), and by fall of 2023, it will complete a $40 million renovation of Dunbar Hall, the most heavily used classroom building on campus. WMU's development of Hilltop Village will offer housing and dining facilities, 40,000+ square feet of retail shopping and a new student center, which will house the Admissions Welcome Center.

The new associate vice president for enrollment management will join WMU as it embarks on a strategic planning process that embeds a diversity, equity and inclusion lens and structure into all aspects of the work, demonstrates continuous improvement, involves campus-wide collaborations and builds on strategic initiatives and brand identity. The AVPEM will infuse those same values into establishing a vision to achieve the University's recruitment, enrollment and retention goals.

Reporting to the provost and vice president for academic affairs, the associate vice president for enrollment management will develop a holistic, strategic plan to grow enrollment. The plan should consider the many opportunities for enrollment growth — undergraduate, graduate, transfer, part-time and certificate enrollment — in order to achieve success.

The ideal candidate will bring significant professional experience managing the complex interplay of marketing and recruiting strategies, enrollment goals and revenue targets, yield, financial aid and retention. The associate vice president for enrollment management will be an exceptional relationship builder and someone with a proven record of creating opportunities for greater collaboration and engagement of campus constituents in new methods to achieve enrollment growth. WMU has an access mission, and it will be essential that the new leader embrace the mission and demonstrate a history of advancing diversity, equity and inclusion. Strong analytical abilities and an aptitude for enhancing systems and processes to shape strategic direction; experience in raising awareness of institutional distinctiveness; and creativity in thinking about how institutional funds can be used to achieve enrollment and student success goals will be essential.

All applications, nominations and inquiries are invited. Applications should include, as separate documents, a CV or resume and a letter of interest addressing the themes in this profile.
