Sacred Heart University invites applications for assistant professor of elementary education to begin August 21, 2017.  The Department of Teacher Education offers Post Baccalaureate and Five Year programs leading to Connecticut Teacher Certification in elementary education (grades 1-6) as well as secondary certifications (grades 7-12) in biology, chemistry, English, general science, mathematics, social studies/history and Spanish. Candidates pursuing initial teacher certification also participate in our graduate teacher internship program and earn Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degrees.  Primary teaching responsibilities are in the area elementary education curriculum and methods, with a focus on science education or other academic content area.  Additional teaching is in areas applicable to candidates in teacher education, especially classroom and standardized assessment. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, advising candidates, implementing an active plan of scholarly research and writing, participating and leadership in department and college committees, and providing service to university and professional communities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in curriculum and instruction or related field, earned by August 15, 2017

  • Certification, or ability to secure Connecticut certification, in elementary education

  • Commitment to diversity and equity in education

  • 3 years of successful teaching experience in the elementary school

  • A record of collaborative professional activity

  • Demonstrated understanding of current standards and policies that impact teacher education

  • Potential for scholarship.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in curriculum and instruction with focus in elementary education

  • 5 or more years of successful teaching experience in the elementary school

  • Expertise in science education at the elementary level

  • Expertise in classroom and standardized assessmentAssistant

  • Record of scholarly publications

  • Successful teaching experience in higher education

  • Experience integrating technology into teaching and learning
