Hofstra University, located on a scenic campus in Hempstead, Long Island, 25 miles east of New York City, was originally founded in 1935 as a private, nonsectarian, coeducational institution. In 1963, Hofstra became Long Island’s first private university. Hofstra’s primary mission is to provide a quality education to its students in an environment that encourages, nurtures, and supports learning through the free and open exchange of ideas, for the betterment of humankind.

Hofstra enrolls 11,200 students, including 6,900 undergraduate students and 4,300 graduate and professional students. The University employs 1,180 faculty members, who are represented in collective bargaining by the American Association of University Professors.

Hofstra is consistently recognized as a top university in several publications. In 2015, Forbes included Hofstra among the 50 most entrepreneurial universities in the U.S. The PayScale College Salary Report identified Hofstra in the top 11 percent of colleges and universities nationwide for mid-career salary of graduates with a bachelor’s degree and in the top 24 percent nationwide for return on investment. Hofstra earns 4.5 stars out of 5 for diversity and inclusiveness from the “LGBT-Friendly Campus Climate Index.” The University was named to the “Military Friendly School” list last year by Victory Media, for being among the top 20 percent of institutions in providing support and services to veterans and active military. In addition, for the past eight years, the Chronicle of Higher Education has named Hofstra on the list of “Great Colleges to Work for” and named the University to its Honor Roll of this list from 2014 through 2016 based on its high rating across multiple categories.

The Director of Human Resources is the University’s chief human resource officer. The Director reports to the Vice President for Legal Affairs and oversees a staff of 16.  The prime responsibilities of the Director are the synchronization of human resource processes, systems, policies, and procedures pertaining to the implementation of talent acquisition, workforce and management development, coaching, employee relations and conflict resolution, benefits, total compensation and rewards, retirement planning and counseling, employee records, union contract management, and student employment.
