VICE PRESIDENT FOR STUDENT LIFE AND DEAN OF STUDENTS

VICE PRESIDENT FOR STUDENT LIFE AND DEAN OF STUDENTS

DAVIDSON COLLEGE

Davidson, North Carolina

Davidson College, one of the nation’s finest liberal arts institutions, seeks a strategic, engaged, and innovative leader as its next Vice President of Student Life and Dean of Students (“Dean”). Davidson’s Division of Student Life has flourished under the long-term leadership of Dean Tom Shandley, who will retire this summer. The next Dean will inherit a strong and dedicated team of student life professionals and will benefit from a campus-wide commitment to the student experience. Reporting to President Carol Quillen and serving as a member of her senior leadership team, the Dean will be a highly visible leader on campus and a principal advisor on all matters concerning the student experience. The Dean will participate in institution- and division-wide planning, and serve as an important strategic partner to all campus constituents.

Characterized by its commitment to preparing students for lives of leadership and service, Davidson provides a rigorous academic experience to its diverse, tight-knit community of 1,950 undergraduates. Since President Quillen’s arrival in 2011, the College has focused on reimagining the liberal arts experience. Along with its traditional liberal arts curriculum, Davidson facilitates collaboration among students, faculty, and practitioners on original research and its application, promotes innovation and entrepreneurship through student-run projects, and offers career preparation initiatives that enhance students’ ability to navigate post-graduate life in a rapidly-changing world.

This is an incredible opportunity for an experienced student affairs professional. The next Dean will have the privilege of leading the Davidson community from a position of strength. The Dean will harness the talents of a committed team, work with remarkable students and an inspirational and supportive president in the delivery of innovative programs and services that meet the needs of Davidson’s diverse and engaged student body. Units reporting to this position include the Offices of the Dean of Students, Student Activities, Residence Life, Civic Engagement, Religious & Spiritual Life, Leadership Development, Multicultural Life, Health & Counseling, and Access and Disability Resources. Success in this position will require visionary leadership, an understanding of and appreciation for the role of student life in a residential liberal arts college, experience with a complex array of services and programs, a passion for students and their development, and a capacity for and commitment to building diverse and inclusive communities.

A search committee of faculty, staff, students, and a member of the Board of Trustees will be chaired by President Quillen and supported by Isaacson, Miller, a national executive search firm. Confidential inquiries, nominations, and applications should be sent in confidence to:
