The Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Costume Design (tenure leading, salary competitive).

The Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film is a premier training program of theatre and film artists in the region thanks to the philanthropic support from the late Johnny Carson, whose endowment to the School provides substantial support for technology, programs and scholarships. In late 2015, the Johnny Carson Foundation announced another $20 million donation as part of an overall $57 million investment by the University to create the new Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts, an exciting new program that creatively fuses performative experiences across film; theatre and live stage performance; gaming, interactive media, broadcast and internet media; and augmented and virtual reality http://arts.unl.edu/carson-center. The Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film is part of the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts that, through its endowment, further supports the theatre faculty and students by funding a professional film series, scholarships, student and faculty travel, and productions for the Nebraska Repertory Theatre, the professional wing of the School.

Duties and responsibilities:

The Assistant Professor will have responsibility in the areas of Teaching, Research/Creative Activity, and Service.

Teaching: The successful candidate will teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including but not limited to: Costume Design (all levels), Rendering, Stage Makeup, Period Styles and Principles of Design; mentor/supervise undergraduate and graduate student design projects and theses;

Research/Creative Activity: Contribute regularly to national and international creativity and/or scholarship in Costume Design. Opportunities exist to design for the University Theatre, the Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts, and the School’s professional wing, the Nebraska Repertory Theatre. 

Service: Serve on faculty committees for the department, college and university.  Community service is encouraged.  Provide service/leadership in appropriate professional organizations in Theatre Design and Technology. 

Other: Work in a collegial fashion with faculty, staff, students, and administration; perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of the School of Theatre and Film.

Minimum qualifications:

Requirements for this position include (but are not limited to): MFA in Costume Design or equivalent professional experience.

Professional experience as a Costume Designer, (2 years).

Academic experience as Costume Design Faculty in an undergraduate and/or graduate training program. (2 years).

Recruitment experience.

Preferred qualifications:

Professional Costume Design experience in Film/TV.

Membership in the Costume Designers Guild 892 or United Scenic Artists 829.

Knowledge of digital design/rendering techniques.
