Associate Vice Chancellor for Research Development

Duties/Responsibilities:

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, invites nominations and applications for the position of Associate Vice Chancellor for Research Development (AVCRD).  The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, the state’s flagship and land grant institution, is a Carnegie doctoral research university rated R1 (very high research activity) and is listed in the Center for Measuring University Performance (CMUP) as a Top 25 public research university.  Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Research & Engagement, this position will lead the campus efforts to develop and strengthen the research culture and increase the capacity and productivity in transdisciplinary research, scholarship, and creative activity across all disciplines in direct support of the University’s journey forward as a Top 25 public research university under our Vol Vision 2020 Journey to the Top strategic plan.

The AVCRD will have management authority and budget responsibilities for groups reporting directly to this position including Research Development, Faculty Development, Core Facilities, and Research Informatics.  The AVCRD will lead the Strategic and Transformative Investments in Research (STIR) program to provide funding to grow the research enterprise.  An additional area of internal financial support includes management of the Scholarly and Research Incentive Funds (SARIF) investment program.  The AVCRD will chair the Associate Deans for Research committee and also represent research administration on a variety of other committees including the Research Council of the Faculty Senate, the Graduate Council, and the Sigma Xi Chapter.  Internally, extensive interactions with deans, faculty, college, and department administrators are expected to promote transdisciplinary scholarship and engaged outreach around the research enterprise.  Externally, extensive interactions with core university partners, strategic partners, and federal funding agencies are also expected.

The individual assuming this position will play a critical leadership role both within the Office of Research & Engagement (especially working the core senior management team in the division), within the university community, and nationally; particularly through partnering with other universities through organizations such as NORDP.  There will be opportunities to work closely with Oak Ridge National Laboratory and to support economic development initiatives. We are seeking candidates who have the ability to contribute in meaningful ways to promote the diversity and intercultural goals of the University.  There may be other duties assigned.

If desired an adjunct appointment with an appropriate department can be arranged.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Ph.D. and appropriate years of experience post Ph.D.
  • Significant scholarly, professional, or creative personal achievement.
  • Knowledge and understanding for enabling extramural research and scholarly discovery across the broad spectrum of scholarship found at a large, complex, R1 public research university.
  • Ability to gain an understanding of the current capabilities, policies and practices, administrative structure, and culture of the University of Tennessee.

Preferred Experience and Qualifications:

  • Prior active extramural research and scholarship.
  • Experience in external engagement, especially with national laboratories, federal agencies and in leading teaming opportunities around large federal funding opportunities.
  • Success in facilitating transdisciplinary research (e.g., of a large research group), developing partnerships, and addressing the administrative support needs of the research community.
  • Experience supporting faculty annual awards, faculty recognition, and faculty achievement.
  • Administrative and program managerial experience equivalent to that of a department head, center director, or institute director, especially in areas around faculty professional development.
  • Experience in managing investment programs supporting the research enterprise.
  • Familiarity with innovation and economic development.
  • Ability to lead and collaborate with faculty, graduate students and administrators to advance the culture of research.
  • Familiarity with (time spent at, collaboration with) R1 institutions, including our peer institutions (see http://bit.ly/2i8p1pK)
  • Verbal and written communication skills at a high degree of proficiency.
