The general counsel is Dartmouth’s chief legal officer and advises the board of trustees, the president, other administrative officers of the institution, and the faculty on a broad range of legal and strategic matters. The general counsel advances Dartmouth’s mission by anticipating, understanding, and explaining the legal ramifications of important issues in higher education and how they impact the institution. The general counsel is responsible for operations, budgets and staffing issues of the Office of the General Counsel, and for retention and management of all outside counsel. The general counsel reports directly to the president and serves as a member of the president’s senior leadership team.

The Office of General Counsel consists of two associate and two assistant general counsel, and three other staff members, in addition to the general counsel. The successful candidate must have a bachelor’s degree plus a JD or LLB from an accredited school of law and be eligible for admission to the New Hampshire bar, or for authorization to practice law in New Hampshire pursuant to N.H. Rule of Professional Conduct 5.5(d), within six months of commencing employment. A minimum of 10 years of legal practice is required, and substantially more relevant experience is desired. Government, corporate, law firm, and other legal and executive experiences may be beneficial, if relevant to the Dartmouth environment.
