Senior Lecturer in Discipline/Lecturer in Discipline  

The School of Professional Studies at Columbia University invites applications for one or more full-time positions at the rank of Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Discipline, effective July 1, 2017. The Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Discipline will teach in the Executive and Full-time MS Program in Strategic Communication, and other degree and non-degree programs in the School. Senior Lecturers in Discipline are expected to have substantial experience and accomplishments, and a superlative record of teaching as a lecturer, and documented evidence of pedagogical excellence in carrying out administrative or other department responsibilities. Lecturers in Discipline are expected to have teaching experience, documented evidence of pedagogical excellence, and evidence of professional growth and activity in the given field. These are full-time, non-tenure-track appointments with multi-year renewal contingent on successful reviews.

The School seeks dynamic experts in the field of communication with the ability to interpret and translate academic theory into practice, and demonstrated expertise in two or more of the following areas:

  • Digital strategy: social media, SEO/SEM, new media trends, analytics

  • Communication theory, rhetoric and persuasion, media theory, ethics

  • Creative expression, ideation

  • Corporate communication/public affairs, crisis communication, internal communication, corporate social responsibility

  • Health, Political or Financial Communication

  • Market research, audience insight, planning

  • Communication channels mix, media

  • Brand positioning, integrated marketing

Ideal candidates will hold a doctorate degree in communication or related field and have demonstrated excellence in teaching at the graduate school level. Successful candidates will exhibit a commitment to excellence in teaching, mentoring, instructional design and engaged scholarship.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, teaching and advising in the MS Programs and related programming areas; active participation in curriculum and program development and evaluation; faculty recruitment and evaluation; enhancing the program's reputation and expanding its network; and development and execution of strategies to support students as they transition to alum. Candidates must be capable of advancing the program's academic mission.

Minimum Degree Required: Bachelor's Degree or equivalent.

Minimum Qualifications:
All applicants MUST meet these minimum qualifications to be considered for the position.

  • Candidates must have a practical command of the theoretical foundations of communication and contribute to areas of focus mentioned above.

  • Demonstrated high quality in teaching at the graduate school level and commitment to excellence in teaching, mentoring, instructional design, and scholarship are required.

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • A Ph.D. or relevant terminal degree is strongly preferred.

  • Experience teaching at a tier-one university and/or top-tier graduate communication program.

  • Experience teaching mid-career professionals and executives.

  • Sophisticated and contemporary approach to program and instructional design as demonstrated by prior teaching experience.

  • Experience designing and delivering courses in a variety of modalities, such as online or blended, in addition to face-to-face.

  • Extensive professional network and a commitment to integrating students into that network to promote their career and professional development.

  • An extensive record of applied scholarship.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a collaborative mindset.
